Local Figure Skater Represents Team USA at 2024 Youth Olympics

Elizabeth Rhodehamel and Kyungeun Jang are among the nominees for the US delegation to the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Gangneung, South Korea.

The United States has announced its nominees for the 2024 Winter Youth Olympic Games, which will take place from January 27 to February 1 in Gangneung, South Korea. The nominees are selected by the US Speed Skating Federation (USSF) based on their performance in national and international competitions.

Among the nominees are two local figure skaters who will represent Team USA at the prestigious event: Elizabeth Rhodehamel and Kyungeun Jang.

Elizabeth Rhodehamel: A Rising Star

Elizabeth Rhodehamel is a 16-year-old figure skater from New York City who has been skating since she was four years old. She started with ballet and jazz before switching to figure skating at age eight. She has been training at the Skating Club of New York under coach John Nicks.

Rhodehamel has competed in several national and international events, including the US Figure Skating Championships, where she placed fourth in junior women’s singles in 2020 and third in 2021. She also won a bronze medal at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Milan, Italy, in November 2021.

USA at 2024 Youth Olympics

Rhodehamel is known for her graceful and elegant skating style, as well as her strong musicality and expression. She has performed programs to songs by artists such as Adele, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande.

Rhodehamel said she was honored and excited to be nominated for the Youth Olympics. “It’s a dream come true for me to represent my country at such a high level,” she said. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity and I hope to make my coaches, family, friends, and fans proud.”

Kyungeun Jang: A Rising Star

Kyungeun Jang is a 15-year-old figure skater from Los Angeles who has been skating since he was six years old. He started with hockey before switching to figure skating at age eight. He has been training at the Los Angeles Ice Arena under coach Mark Dabritz.

Jang has competed in several national and international events, including the US Figure Skating Championships, where he placed fifth in junior men’s singles in 2020 and fourth in 2021. He also won a silver medal at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Milan, Italy, in November 2021.

Jang is known for his powerful and dynamic skating style, as well as his technical skills and athleticism. He has performed programs to songs by artists such as BTS, Justin Bieber, Drake, and Billie Eilish.

Jang said he was thrilled and honored to be nominated for the Youth Olympics. “It’s an amazing experience for me to represent my country at such a high level,” he said. “I’m very thankful for this opportunity and I hope to make my coaches, family, friends, and fans proud.”

The US Team: A Strong Contender

The US team for the Youth Olympics consists of six skaters: three men’s singles finalists (Sean Shuai Julius Kazenecki), one women’s singles finalist (Elizabeth Rhodehamel), one pairs team (Kyungeun Jang & Yuna Kim), one ice dance team (Shin Jia Nakai Ami), and one team event (a mixed team of four skaters).

The US team is considered one of the strongest contenders for medals at the Youth Olympics. The US team has won six gold medals (four men’s singles finals), two silver medals (one women’s singles final), one bronze medal (one pairs team), one silver medal (one ice dance team), one gold medal (one team event) at previous editions of the event since its inception in 2010.

The Youth Olympics will feature five disciplines: men’s singles; women’s singles; pairs; ice dance; and a team event between NOCs. The daily schedule for skating in Gangwon is set as follows:
