Man arrested after shooting and crashing spree in Colorado Springs

A man who allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and tried to break into a neighbor’s house was shot by the homeowner before crashing into several downtown businesses in Colorado Springs early Sunday morning.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), the incident began around 1:30 a.m. on the 1900 block of S. Prospect Street, where a man and a woman were involved in a domestic altercation. The woman ran away from the man and sought help from a neighbor across the street. The man, identified as 24-year-old Fidencio Meza-Pelayo, temporarily lost sight of her and entered and exited his house before getting into his vehicle and backing into a neighbor’s parked car. He then attempted to break into the house where he thought his girlfriend was hiding. The homeowner of that house fired a single shot, hitting Meza-Pelayo.

Despite being injured, Meza-Pelayo drove away from the scene and headed towards downtown Colorado Springs. He struck a parked car and crashed into multiple businesses on the 200 block of N. Tejon Street, causing significant damage. Among the affected businesses were the Skirted Heiffer restaurant and the AT&T store. CSPD officers arrived at the scene and arrested Meza-Pelayo. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

Suspect faces multiple charges

Meza-Pelayo is facing several charges, including kidnapping, assault, burglary, and traffic violations. CSPD said the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be added. The female victim was not injured in the incident and is cooperating with the police. The homeowner who shot Meza-Pelayo is not facing any charges at this time, as the shooting was deemed to be in self-defense.
