CMU’s Different Approach to DEI Initiatives
<p>Colorado Mesa University (CMU) has taken a unique stance on fostering a sense of belonging among students, choosing to focus on core values rather than traditional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. While other institutions have adjusted their policies in response to political directives, CMU believes its long-standing approach is more effective and enduring.</p>
<h2>Seven Core Values Shape Student Experience</h2>
<p>Unlike many universities that implement structured DEI programs, CMU emphasizes seven key values: love, dignity, courage, humility, resilience, curiosity, and power. According to David Ludlam, CMU’s Vice President of Communications, these principles form the foundation of the school’s efforts to cultivate an inclusive environment.</p>
<p>“We’ve never had to change the way that we think about, speak about, or write about our values. We are just doing it a different way, in a way that we think is more lasting and effective when it comes to making students feel like they belong here,” Ludlam explained.</p>

<h2>No Formal DEI Programs, But a Culture of Inclusion</h2>
<p>CMU’s approach does not include mandated diversity training, a common feature at many institutions. Instead, the university promotes an organic integration of belonging through day-to-day interactions and shared values across campus.</p>

<h2>Student-Led Cultural Inclusion Efforts</h2>
<p>Although CMU does not enforce formal DEI initiatives, the university supports a student-run Cultural Inclusion Council. The council, funded by student fees, includes nine student alliances, such as the Black Student Alliance, Gender and Sexualities Alliance, and the Latino Student Alliance.</p>
<p>According to Trey Downey, CMU’s Director of Student Life, the Cultural Inclusion Council provides critical resources and opportunities for cultural exchange. “They focus on making sure their counterparts that are here on campus have the resources and support they need, as well as have the ability to share their culture with other groups on campus as well,” Downey said.</p>
<p>CMU’s alternative approach to fostering belonging continues to distinguish the university from others, demonstrating that inclusive environments can thrive outside of traditional DEI structures.</p>
