CMU’s Different Approach to DEI Initiatives

<p>Colorado Mesa University &lpar;CMU&rpar; has taken a unique stance on fostering a sense of belonging among students&comma; choosing to focus on core values rather than traditional diversity&comma; equity&comma; and inclusion &lpar;DEI&rpar; programs&period; While other institutions have adjusted their policies in response to political directives&comma; CMU believes its long-standing approach is more effective and enduring&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<h2>Seven Core Values Shape Student Experience<&sol;h2>&NewLine;<p>Unlike many universities that implement structured DEI programs&comma; CMU emphasizes seven key values&colon; love&comma; dignity&comma; courage&comma; humility&comma; resilience&comma; curiosity&comma; and power&period; According to David Ludlam&comma; CMU’s Vice President of Communications&comma; these principles form the foundation of the school’s efforts to cultivate an inclusive environment&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;We’ve never had to change the way that we think about&comma; speak about&comma; or write about our values&period; We are just doing it a different way&comma; in a way that we think is more lasting and effective when it comes to making students feel like they belong here&comma;” Ludlam explained&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><img class&equals;"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10019" src&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;budgyapp&period;com&sol;wp-content&sol;uploads&sol;2025&sol;02&sol;Colorado-Mesa-University-campus-inclusion-event&period;jpg" alt&equals;"Colorado Mesa University campus inclusion event" width&equals;"687" height&equals;"444" &sol;><&sol;p>&NewLine;<h2>No Formal DEI Programs&comma; But a Culture of Inclusion<&sol;h2>&NewLine;<p>CMU’s approach does not include mandated diversity training&comma; a common feature at many institutions&period; Instead&comma; the university promotes an organic integration of belonging through day-to-day interactions and shared values across campus&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<ul data-spread&equals;"false">&NewLine;<li>CMU believes that creating an inclusive environment does not require a centralized DEI office&period;<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>The administration encourages students and staff to embody the university’s values in daily interactions&period;<&sol;li>&NewLine;<li>Officials argue this method fosters a stronger and more natural sense of community&period;<&sol;li>&NewLine;<&sol;ul>&NewLine;<h2>Student-Led Cultural Inclusion Efforts<&sol;h2>&NewLine;<p>Although CMU does not enforce formal DEI initiatives&comma; the university supports a student-run Cultural Inclusion Council&period; The council&comma; funded by student fees&comma; includes nine student alliances&comma; such as the Black Student Alliance&comma; Gender and Sexualities Alliance&comma; and the Latino Student Alliance&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>According to Trey Downey&comma; CMU’s Director of Student Life&comma; the Cultural Inclusion Council provides critical resources and opportunities for cultural exchange&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;They focus on making sure their counterparts that are here on campus have the resources and support they need&comma; as well as have the ability to share their culture with other groups on campus as well&comma;” Downey said&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>CMU’s alternative approach to fostering belonging continues to distinguish the university from others&comma; demonstrating that inclusive environments can thrive outside of traditional DEI structures&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;
