Colorado mourns the loss of broadcasting legend Larry Zimmer

<p>Colorado sports fans are in grief as they bid farewell to one of the most iconic voices in the state’s history<strong>Larry Zimmer</strong>, who spent more than five decades calling games for the University of Colorado and the Denver Broncos, passed away on Saturday at the age of 88.</p>
<h2>A remarkable career spanning seven decades</h2>
<p>Zimmer began his broadcasting career in 1957, after graduating from the University of Missouri and serving two years in the US Army. He worked as a radio announcer for high school and college games in Missouri and Michigan, before moving to Denver in 1971 to join KOA.</p>
<p>At KOA, Zimmer became a household name for Colorado sports fans, as he covered the Broncos for 26 years, including four Super Bowls. He also called 486 CU football games and 525 men’s basketball games, earning him a spot in the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.</p>
<p>Zimmer’s distinctive voice and style captivated listeners with his passion, enthusiasm, and professionalism. He was known for his memorable calls, such as “Touchdown, John Elway!” and &#8220;The Buffs are going to the Orange Bowl!&#8221;.</p>
<h2>A beloved figure in the sports community</h2>
<p>Zimmer was not only a talented broadcaster, but also a kind and generous person, who touched the lives of many people in the sports community. He was a mentor and a friend to many of his colleagues, such as Dave Logan, the current voice of the Broncos, who said Zimmer encouraged him to apply for the job at KOA.</p>

<p>Zimmer was also a devoted husband to his wife of 66 years, Brigitte, who was his constant companion and partner in his travels. Brigitte, who survived a stroke in 2015, was by his side until his final moments.</p>
<p>Zimmer received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to sports broadcasting, such as the Chris Schenkel Award from the National Football Foundation in 2009, and the Lindsey Nelson Award from the All-American Football Foundation in 2010.</p>

<p>Zimmer’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes and condolences from fans, players, coaches, and media members, who expressed their gratitude and admiration for his work and his character.
