“Set Up for Success”: D51 Kicks Off School Registration with Resources, Supplies, and Support
<p data-start="364" data-end="502">From free meals to backpacks full of supplies, Mesa County’s largest school district is helping families start the school year strong.</p>
<p data-start="569" data-end="864">It’s that time of year again — back-to-school season is underway in Mesa County, and School District 51 (D51) is doing more than just opening registration. They&#8217;re rallying the entire community to make sure every student walks through school doors feeling prepared, confident, and supported.</p>
<p data-start="866" data-end="1052">Registration for the 2025–26 school year officially opened on July 17, and district officials are encouraging parents and guardians to get ahead of the curve by signing up early.</p>

<p data-start="1056" data-end="1370">“We do encourage families to register their students prior to the end of July,” said Callie Berkson, Public Information Officer for D51. “That gives our schools time to communicate with new families, welcome them in, and share important info about things like back-to-school night and the first day of school.”</p>

<h3 data-start="1372" data-end="1415">Stuffing the Bus — and Filling the Gaps</h3>
<p data-start="1417" data-end="1618">While some families are already browsing supply lists and buying new shoes, others may be facing tough choices between notebooks and necessities. That’s where a long-running local partnership comes in.</p>
<p data-start="1620" data-end="1834">Through the “Stuff the Bus” campaign — a collaboration between Mesa Mall, the D51 Foundation, and Town Square Media — local residents can donate new school supplies that are distributed across the district.</p>

<p data-start="1838" data-end="1970">“This program helps students in need get what they need to learn,” Berkson said. “And every donation really does make a difference.”</p>

<p data-start="1972" data-end="2212">The drive collects everything from backpacks and binders to crayons and calculators. Collection bins are set up around the mall, and the initiative will run through early August to ensure supplies reach students before the first bell rings.</p>

<p data-start="2253" data-end="2347">In addition to school supplies, District 51 is making sure kids are fed — no strings attached.</p>
<p data-start="2349" data-end="2535">Thanks to Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All program, every student enrolled in the district can receive a free breakfast and lunch each day, regardless of household income.</p>

<p data-start="2539" data-end="2800">“Any student can go to their school and get a free and very nutritious meal from our amazing nutrition team,” Berkson said. “It’s not based on income — but we still ask families to fill out the form because it helps the district qualify for additional support.”</p>

<p data-start="2802" data-end="3022">Filling out the application (even if you don&#8217;t think you need the free meals) helps D51 receive additional funding for educational programs, technology, and classroom support — so it’s a small step that has a big impact.</p>

<p data-start="3062" data-end="3223">District 51 is also reminding families to check their contact information and make sure everything is current — especially phone numbers and email addresses.</p>
