Former School Bus Driver Arrested for Driving Intoxicated with Students Onboard

<p>LAPORTE COUNTY&comma; Ind&period; &lpar;WPTA&rpar; — A former school bus driver for the LaPorte Community School Corporation has been arrested and charged after allegedly driving under the influence with students aboard her bus earlier this year&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Kayla Pier&comma; 38&comma; of Michigan City&comma; faces charges of operating while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent following a months-long investigation by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office&period; The incident occurred on September 20&comma; when Pier was transporting 32 students from LaPorte Middle School to Riley Elementary School&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<h4>Students Alert Authorities<&sol;h4>&NewLine;<p>The students aboard the bus noticed erratic driving behavior and reported Pier’s suspicious actions to school officials&period; Upon arrival at Riley Elementary&comma; Pier was removed from the bus&comma; and she resigned from her position later that day&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Following the incident&comma; school officials submitted a toxicology report to the sheriff’s office&comma; which prompted the investigation that began in late October&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><img class&equals;"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9122" src&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;budgyapp&period;com&sol;wp-content&sol;uploads&sol;2024&sol;12&sol;school-bus-intoxicated-driving&period;jpg" alt&equals;"school bus&comma; intoxicated driving" width&equals;"635" height&equals;"354" &sol;><&sol;p>&NewLine;<h4>Investigation and Arrest<&sol;h4>&NewLine;<p>The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant for Pier after the investigation concluded last week&period; Pier turned herself in on Friday&comma; was booked into the LaPorte County Jail&comma; and was later released on bond&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Captain Derek Allen of the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office commended the students&&num;8217&semi; quick actions&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Their attention to detail and prompt actions may have prevented a tragedy from occurring&comma;” he said&period; He also thanked the school administrators for their cooperation throughout the investigation&comma; underscoring the importance of student safety&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;
