Fort Wayne Zoo Marks 60 Years: From Nature Preserve to Local Treasure

Sixty years ago, what started as a modest nature preserve in Franke Park blossomed into one of Fort Wayne’s most beloved attractions — the Fort Wayne Zoo. And this week, the Zoo is throwing open its gates to celebrate with the community that made it thrive.

From Modest Beginnings to Major Milestone

Back in 1952, few could have imagined that a simple nature preserve would one day evolve into the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. By 1965, the zoo as folks know it today began to take shape — a place where families could get up close with wildlife without leaving Allen County.

Fast forward six decades, and the Fort Wayne Zoo has cemented its place as a must-visit destination, welcoming thousands each season.

One sentence reminder: behind every roaring lion or waddling penguin is a legacy built by generations.

New Additions Keep Things Fresh

Amy Lazoff, the Zoo’s Vice President of Mission Impact, says they’re always adding a bit of sparkle.

“We’ve been seeing a lot of great changes, you know, fresh colors, new looks, expanding our season,” Lazoff said.

One of this summer’s highlights? New swan boats gliding across the water — a relaxing way to take in the scenery and make family memories.

It’s a small touch but exactly the kind of charm that keeps guests coming back year after year.

A Zoo Like Few Others

The Fort Wayne Zoo isn’t just a local gem — it’s one of only 14 independent zoos in the entire country.

That independence means they’re community-supported, community-loved, and always listening to what locals want to see next.

For longtime members, it’s proof that when a city rallies behind something, it can thrive for generations.

A Birthday Bash to Say Thank You

To mark its big 6-0, the Zoo is rolling out the red carpet for guests — at a bargain. For one day only, Thursday, admission drops to just $10 for adults and kids alike.

Lazoff says it’s the Zoo’s way of giving back: “It’s only ten dollars for adults and children, so it’s a great day to come to the zoo and celebrate with us.”

There’ll be cake, stickers for early birds, and plenty of surprises tucked away around each bend of the park.

One small line: come for the animals, stay for the party.

More Than Just a Zoo

The Fort Wayne Zoo has grown into something more than just habitats and exhibits. It’s an anchor for conservation education, local jobs, and even a bit of childhood nostalgia for countless families.

Locals say it best: where else can you spend an afternoon feeding a giraffe, laughing at playful otters, then paddle a swan boat before grabbing an ice cream cone?

Here’s a quick snapshot of what makes it special:

Looking Ahead

As the Zoo heads into its next chapter, staff promise more updates, fresh exhibits, and reasons for guests — old and new — to keep coming back.

One thing’s certain: if the last 60 years are any clue, the Fort Wayne Zoo will keep families smiling for generations to come.
