Mesa County Takes Steps to Protect Natural Floodplains
<p>Officials in Mesa County are stepping up efforts to safeguard natural floodplains, particularly those surrounding the Colorado River. With designated Special Flood Hazard Areas, county leaders are focusing on long-term strategies to manage water flow, protect wildlife, and prevent residential damage.</p>
<h2>Why Floodplain Protection Matters</h2>
<p>Mesa County&#8217;s floodplains serve a critical role in maintaining ecological balance and mitigating flood risks. Carrie Gudorf, Regulatory Programs Manager for Mesa County Public Works and Engineering Department, explained the floodplain structure in simple terms.</p>
<p>&#8220;In the Special Flood Hazard Area, you have the floodway, which is the main area of the river. You have the 1% annual chance for flooding and then you have the 0.2% annual chance for flooding,&#8221; Gudorf stated. &#8220;The floodway is the main channel that primarily floods.&#8221;</p>
<p>To prevent uncontrolled flooding and property damage, the county prohibits new construction in floodways. This restriction allows the river to flow naturally without obstruction, reducing risks to communities while preserving essential habitats.</p>

<p>&#8220;There are programs that are looking at ways that we can do bank stabilization and ways that we can protect the natural function of the river, which increases fish habitat and wildlife habitat,&#8221; Gudorf explained.</p>
