<p>As winter temperatures set in, experts are urging drivers to take proactive steps to ensure their cars are ready for the colder months. T.J. Steele, the manager of Tom Steele Auto-Repair Shop, emphasizes the importance of routine maintenance and timely checks to avoid breakdowns during the harsh winter weather.</p>

<p>Steele highlights that many drivers wait until it’s too late to address critical issues like tire maintenance and antifreeze checks. This procrastination can lead to unnecessary risks, especially during the first snowfalls. This past Monday, Indianapolis experienced just half an inch of snow, yet it resulted in over 160 accidents, underscoring how quickly winter weather can create hazardous driving conditions.</p>
<p>“There are people that didn’t do the tire stuff, didn’t do the antifreeze checks, and all the maintenance on the car was not done,” Steele said, urging drivers to take action before the cold really sets in.</p>

<p>To prepare for winter, Steele advises drivers to perform a thorough check of their vehicles. The basics include ensuring that tires are properly inflated and that there’s enough fuel in the tank. He also recommends checking that the car’s heating system is functioning correctly.</p>
<p>“If the tire light is on, address it. You don’t want to have a blowout; it’s too cold to be changing tires on the side of the road,” Steele warns.</p>
<p>In addition to tire and fuel checks, drivers should inspect antifreeze levels, as freezing temperatures can quickly cause problems if the coolant system isn’t in top condition.</p>

<p>Steele stresses the importance of setting aside time to complete these simple checks before hitting the road. Rushing through a winter drive without ensuring the car is in proper working condition can result in inconvenient—and dangerous—situations.</p>
<p>“Just take the time to look over your car before you get in and make sure it’s ready because there are a lot of people who don’t do that and then they end up having a flat,” Steele said.</p>
