Lightsabers, Legacy, and Local Love: Grand Junction Gathers for Star Wars Day at the Avalon
<p class="" data-start="381" data-end="622">For one night, the streets of Grand Junction shimmered with lightsabers and stormtroopers. Jedi robes swept across the sidewalk. And inside the Avalon Theatre, the Millennium Falcon took flight once again—on the big screen, where it belongs.</p>
<p class="" data-start="624" data-end="905">On May 4, better known worldwide as <em data-start="660" data-end="675">Star Wars Day</em>, the historic Avalon Theatre opened its doors for a community-wide celebration of the iconic space saga, hosting a back-to-back screening of the original trilogy: <em data-start="839" data-end="851">A New Hope</em>, <em data-start="853" data-end="878">The Empire Strikes Back</em>, and <em data-start="884" data-end="904">Return of the Jedi</em>.</p>
<h2 class="" data-start="907" data-end="951">“A Long Time Ago” Meets Downtown Colorado</h2>
<p class="" data-start="953" data-end="1041">For many attendees, the Avalon holds more than movie memories—it holds personal history.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1043" data-end="1237">“It’s always really special to hear some of the stories from those who first saw <em data-start="1124" data-end="1135">Star Wars</em> come out at this theater,” said Matt Thornton, Development Director of the Avalon Theatre Foundation.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1239" data-end="1543">That nostalgia was thick in the air as lifelong fans gathered with their children and grandchildren, sharing the story that defined generations. The sounds of John Williams’ score echoed through the lobby, where tiny Princess Leias clutched popcorn buckets and fully-grown Darth Vaders posed for selfies.</p>

<p class="" data-start="1586" data-end="1708">While fans came for Wookiees and blasters, the night had another mission: raising money for the Avalon Theatre Foundation.</p>
<p class="" data-start="1710" data-end="1976">“All proceeds from today go right back into helping this space thrive,” said Thornton. “The Avalon Theater Foundation has always been a proponent of the arts. We have a community benefit fund for other nonprofits and local artists to help them utilize this theater.”</p>
<p class="" data-start="1978" data-end="2207">That mission resonated with attendees, many of whom weren’t just fans—they were locals invested in the arts, education, and civic life. By turning a pop culture celebration into a fundraiser, the event connected fun with purpose.</p>

<p class="" data-start="3375" data-end="3528">“The first year I never thought it was going to take off like it did,” said Thornton. “Even with this second year, it seems to be growing in popularity.”</p>
<p class="" data-start="3530" data-end="3784">With growing attendance and increased community engagement, Thornton says he’s eyeing future additions like cosplay contests, trivia rounds, and maybe even lightsaber duels. The vision? Turning May 4 into an annual cultural tentpole for the Grand Valley.</p>
<h2 class="" data-start="3786" data-end="3821">More Than Movies—A Shared Galaxy</h2>
<p class="" data-start="3823" data-end="4059">What made the event special wasn’t just the nostalgia or the screen. It was the shared laughter in the aisles. The children pretending to use the Force. The older fans remembering a time when <em data-start="4015" data-end="4026">Star Wars</em> was new, raw, and revolutionary.</p>
<p class="" data-start="4061" data-end="4183">“I love seeing all the people coming in today and all the kids dressed up in outfits. It’s super special,” Thornton added.</p>
<p class="" data-start="4185" data-end="4449">As the credits rolled and the lobby filled once more with buzz, it became clear: <em data-start="4266" data-end="4281">Star Wars Day</em> isn’t just a tribute to a galaxy far, far away. In Grand Junction, it’s a celebration of community, imagination, and the power of gathering around a story that unites.</p>
