Center for Independence Hosts Vaccine Clinic for Individuals with Disabilities

The Center for Independence in Grand Junction, Colorado, held a vaccine clinic on December 2, providing essential immunizations for seniors, caregivers, and individuals with disabilities. This event offered a critical opportunity for vulnerable populations to access much-needed healthcare.

Supporting Vulnerable Communities

Jennifer Shook, the Program Development Manager for the Center for Independence, emphasized the clinic’s mission: “Our focus through the USAging funding is to help people living with disabilities, supporting family members who are elderly, or working with people with disabilities. So really, we want the ecosystem around people who are more vulnerable.”

The clinic builds on the success of a prior Low to No-Cost vaccine clinic held on November 14, continuing efforts to reach those who may face barriers to healthcare access. Shook highlighted the importance of creating options for those who can’t easily get vaccinated: “Not everybody has the time to run to their grocery store or get it while they’re waiting in line.”

Vaccines Offered at the Clinic

Attendees at the December 2 clinic had access to multiple vaccines, including:

  • Flu
  • COVID-19
  • Pneumonia
  • Shingles
  • RSV

These vaccines are vital, particularly for individuals with compromised health or limited mobility, as they help prevent severe illness and hospitalization.

Why Now Is the Right Time

Shook underscored the timing of the clinic, noting that this season brings increased risks of transmission. “This is the time of year we’re going to be inside more. We’re going to be around our families, our loved ones. Let’s make sure that we’re going into this as healthy as possible,” she said.

Vaccination becomes even more critical during the colder months, as gatherings in indoor settings can heighten the spread of respiratory illnesses. For those with vulnerable family members or friends, now is the moment to prioritize immunizations.

More Opportunities to Get Vaccinated

For individuals who missed the December 2 clinic, the Center for Independence will host another session on December 17. This follow-up event aims to continue providing accessible healthcare to those in need, ensuring they have a chance to protect themselves and their loved ones.
