A recent marijuana recall in Colorado has raised health concerns among medical users and dispensaries, with some calling for stricter regulations. The state issued a health advisory for contaminated cannabis exceeding acceptable yeast and mold limits.
Health Concerns for Medical Users
Andrea Labak, a Grand Junction resident who relies on marijuana for medical treatment, voiced her worries over the recall.
“It concerned me because I have health conditions, and I’m disabled,” Labak said. Her primary fear is that contaminated cannabis could negatively impact medical patients with compromised immune systems.
Labak believes the medical cannabis sector should have stricter oversight than the recreational market.
“When it’s on the medical side, I would push for even more regulation than on the recreational side because medical patients deal with a lot of different issues and it could make them very sick if they have a suppressed immune system,” she explained.
Dispensaries Advocate for Transparency
Emma Cruz, General Manager of Cana Care, emphasized the importance of clear communication in situations like these.
“I think the big thing is being transparent. In the events where there might be a recall, being transparent with the customers who might have been affected by that recall,” Cruz said. “And also acting with urgency to make sure that that product doesn’t go out to anybody else.”
Cana Care was not affected by the recall and has never received contaminated products. However, Cruz stated they would immediately pull any affected products if necessary.
“As a dispensary, we don’t really have anything to do with the growing portion of everything. But once we are informed of a hold, it really is a matter of utmost importance of pulling it off the shelf and ensuring that all customers who may have been affected are also aware that they made that purchase,” Cruz added.
The Recall and State Response
The State of Colorado named Colorado Weedery as part of the distribution list for the recalled batches. The dispensary maintains that they never sold moldy products to customers. The recall has led to increased scrutiny over the state’s regulatory processes and raised questions about how dispensaries ensure product quality.
