GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — In a major accolade for Mesa County’s healthcare landscape, Community Hospital has been awarded the 2025 Outstanding Patient Experience Award by Healthgrades, placing it among the top 15% of hospitals nationwide for excellence in patient-centered care.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, May 13, positioning Community Hospital as the only hospital in Mesa County to earn the award this year.
“This recognition is a testament to our team’s relentless focus on compassionate, high-quality care,” said Chris Thomas, President and CEO of Community Hospital. “Being nationally recognized sets us apart as a quality leader in our region and further demonstrates that Community Hospital is an exceptional place to receive health care.”
A Rare Achievement in the High Desert
Healthgrades evaluates thousands of hospitals across the U.S. using a detailed methodology based on Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey data from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Only hospitals that meet rigorous criteria across ten specific categories are awarded.
Community Hospital not only met but exceeded those thresholds, Healthgrades officials confirmed.
| Award | Organization | Ranking Tier | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outstanding Patient Experience Award | Healthgrades | Top 15% nationally | 2025 |
What the Ranking Measures
The Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award is based on survey responses covering a range of topics critical to the hospital stay experience. Among them:
-
Nurse and doctor communication
-
Responsiveness of hospital staff
-
Pain management
-
Clarity of medication explanations
-
Room cleanliness and quietness
-
Post-discharge instructions
Community Hospital outperformed its peers in nearly all categories, according to Healthgrades senior physician consultant Debra Gradick.
“We commend Community Hospital for going above and beyond,” Gradick said. “Better patient experiences lead to better health outcomes, which is why it’s so important for patients to choose a hospital that excels at providing high quality, compassionate care.”
Competitive Healthcare Market, Local Standout
Mesa County has seen a tightening race among healthcare providers as more facilities compete to attract and retain patients from across the Western Slope.
Community Hospital’s recognition could influence both patient preference and physician referrals in a region where many still rely on word-of-mouth and local trust to make health decisions.
Healthgrades’ data-driven approach adds a layer of transparency to a hospital’s reputation—especially valuable in rural and semi-rural markets where formal rankings are less frequently publicized.
Mesa County’s Healthcare Profile
| Hospital | Awarded by Healthgrades (2025) | Type | Ownership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Community Hospital | ✅ | Acute Care | Nonprofit |
| St. Mary’s Medical Center | ❌ | Trauma, Specialty | Catholic/Private |
| Colorado Canyons Hospital | ❌ | Critical Access | County-owned |
Community Hospital’s win is expected to give it a reputational boost in the increasingly metrics-driven world of U.S. healthcare. Hospitals that earn national accolades like this tend to see gains in patient satisfaction, staff retention, and insurance network inclusion.
Leadership Emphasis on Care, Not Just Metrics
Thomas emphasized that while awards are important, the real success lies in the day-to-day care that patients receive.
“This isn’t about checking boxes,” he said. “It’s about how patients feel when they’re here—whether they’re being heard, respected, and treated with dignity.”
Founded in 1946, Community Hospital operates as a nonprofit and provides a range of services from orthopedics and oncology to maternity and urgent care. The hospital has expanded steadily in recent years, with new outpatient facilities and physician partnerships across Western Colorado.
