D51 Secures $50,000 Grant for Fruitvale Elementary Park Revamp

In a significant boost for local education and community wellness, School District 51 has been awarded a $50,000 grant from the Colorado Health Foundation. This funding will support the planning process for the much-anticipated improvements to the playground at Fruitvale Elementary School.

A Vision for the Fruitvale Wellness Park

The project, dubbed the “Fruitvale Wellness Park,” aims to create a more inclusive and accessible playground for students and the surrounding community. Kari Perez, the Project Manager, expressed her excitement about the grant, stating, “This has been a long time coming.” The initiative is particularly important as over 21% of the student body has unique accessibility needs.

  • Key Features of the Project:
    • Focus on Accessibility: Ensuring all students can participate in play
    • Community-Centric Design: Incorporating feedback from local families

Perez highlighted the challenges faced by students with disabilities, noting that many are unable to use the current playground due to its gravel and rock base. “It is heartbreaking to see them sit in their wheelchairs on the outside of the playground, watching other kids play,” she said. The goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for all children, regardless of their physical abilities.

Community Engagement Kicks Off

To gather input from the community, Fruitvale Elementary School will host the “Fruitvale Wellness Park Planning Launch Party” on Friday, October 18, from 4-6 PM. This event invites everyone to participate in shaping the future of the playground. Attendees will have the opportunity to fill out surveys and share their ideas for the new park.

  • Event Highlights:
    • Free Food and Music: Enjoy refreshments and entertainment
    • Crafts and Activities: Fun for the whole family, including a bounce house
    • Gift Card Drawings: Incentives for participation

“This is a chance for Grand Junction to come together and help us make this dream become a reality,” Perez urged. The event aims to foster community spirit and ensure that the new playground meets the diverse needs of all students.

A Step Towards Inclusivity

The Fruitvale Wellness Park project represents a significant step towards inclusivity in the community. By addressing the accessibility issues of the current playground, the initiative aims to create a space where all children can play, learn, and grow together. The support from the Colorado Health Foundation underscores the importance of such projects in promoting health and wellness in schools.

As the planning process unfolds, the collaboration between the school district and the community will be crucial in bringing this vision to life. The upcoming launch party is just the beginning of what promises to be an exciting journey toward a more inclusive playground for Fruitvale Elementary.
