Families in DeKalb County may soon have a vibrant new destination to cool off and connect. A local nonprofit is rallying the community to fund a fully accessible playground and splash pad, a project designed to bring children of all abilities together in a single safe space.
With one third of the funding secured, organizers say community support is now vital to turning these blueprints into reality by late spring.
A Vision for Inclusive Play
Fortify Life, the Auburn based nonprofit behind the project, has unveiled plans for “Fortify Play” near the intersection of Connection Drive and West Seventh Street. The design goes far beyond a standard park. It features a 10 feature splash pad and a playground specifically engineered for inclusivity.
Key features include a zip line, a unity rocker, and a merry go round accessible to children with mobility challenges.
“We want to create a multi age, inclusive play environment where every child can thrive,” said Sydney Kent, Development Manager at Fortify Life.
The concept focuses on removing physical barriers that often separate children on traditional playgrounds. By integrating accessible equipment with water play elements, the group aims to foster social connection among families who might otherwise have few places to gather comfortably.
Bridging the Funding Gap
The ambitious project comes with a $1.5 million price tag. While the organization has successfully raised approximately $500,000 so far, a significant gap remains.
The funds will cover:
- Purchase and installation of specialized accessible play equipment
- Construction of the 10 feature splash pad system
- Safety surfacing to prevent injuries
- Landscaping and accessible pathways
Organizers emphasize that every dollar counts. They are appealing to local businesses, families, and philanthropists to close the remaining $1 million deficit before the construction window opens.
Community Steps Up
To reach their goal, Fortify Life has launched a series of community centered fundraising events. Local restaurant owners have already joined the cause by hosting dine and donate nights where a portion of sales goes directly to the park fund.
Residents can also look forward to a Mother’s Day 5K fundraiser. This event invites participants to run or walk to support the playground.
“People are looking for different ways they can partner with us. Whether it is sponsoring a piece of the playground, signing up for the 5K, or dining and donating, small people doing small things make a huge difference.”
Sydney Kent noted that the project is bigger than just her team. It represents a collective effort to build something lasting for the city of Auburn and surrounding areas.
Breaking Ground Soon
The timeline for the park relies heavily on the success of these fundraising efforts. If the financial targets are met, Fortify Life hopes to break ground in late Spring 2026.
Once construction begins, the installation of the equipment and splash pad features will follow quickly. The goal is to have the facility open and operational as soon as possible, giving families a new spot to enjoy the warmer months.
For now, the empty lot near West Seventh Street stands as a symbol of potential. With the right support, it will soon become a buzzing hub of laughter, water play, and community spirit.
Organizers urge anyone interested in donating or volunteering to visit the Fortify Life website or contact their office directly.
