Local Group Holds Fundraiser to Make Art More Accessible in Grand Junction

A unique fundraiser held by Geek Parties of the Grand Valley on April 27 in Grand Junction, Colorado, brought together community members for a lively afternoon of competition, trivia, and fun, all in support of making local theater more accessible to everyone.

The Poe versus Shakespeare Fundraiser featured teams battling it out in a race, trivia challenges, and other games, all while raising money for the group’s upcoming 2025 theater events. The funds generated will help ensure that both major productions are free for the community to enjoy, emphasizing the group’s mission to make art accessible to all.

Making Theater Accessible to All

Ann Hartter, the Executive Director of Geek Parties of the Grand Valley, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in the arts. “Theater should be accessible to everybody. It is really important that people who want to be on stage can be on stage. If people want to work as a director or as a producer or as part of the crew, they should have an opportunity to do so,” Hartter said. “It’s also essential that people have access to watch and experience that, even if they don’t want to be on the other side.”

Hartter highlighted that the event was not only about raising funds but about fostering a sense of community. “People come together, bond over shared interests, whether it’s spooky stories or the literary magic of Shakespeare. They get to know each other, and enjoy different aspects of the experience—whether it’s the literary part, the games, or just having fun,” she said.

Community-Building Through Art

The fundraiser’s atmosphere was one of inclusivity and lighthearted fun, encouraging attendees to connect with one another while supporting a good cause. Hartter expressed her belief in the power of art as a means of personal expression, noting, “Art is an amazing way for expression, and we really want people to have something that they can enjoy without it costing them out of their pocketbook.”

By making theater events free to attend, Geek Parties of the Grand Valley ensures that the arts remain a vibrant and accessible part of the community, offering opportunities for everyone, regardless of background or income.
