With pedestrian fatalities surging in Colorado, the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) is emphasizing the importance of pedestrian safety. Officers are urging both walkers and drivers to stay alert and follow key safety guidelines to prevent accidents.
Alarming Rise in Pedestrian Fatalities
A study by North Carolina-based DeMayo Law Office revealed that pedestrian deaths in Colorado increased by 75.33% between 2019 and 2023. The data underscores growing concerns over pedestrian safety, particularly in urban areas where traffic is dense and visibility can be limited.
Law enforcement officials say many of these incidents are preventable, and awareness plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of accidents.
Safety Tips for Pedestrians
John Ferguson, Police Motor Technician with GJPD, stressed the importance of pedestrians adhering to traffic laws. He highlighted several key precautions:
- Always use designated crosswalks and follow traffic signals.
- Avoid crossing intersections where pedestrian access is restricted.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to enhance visibility, especially at night.
- In icy conditions, pay attention to footing to prevent slips and falls.
Advice for Drivers
Motorists also play a significant role in preventing pedestrian accidents. GJPD urges drivers to stay vigilant, particularly in high-risk areas. Officers recommend:
- Being cautious near crosswalks and always yielding to pedestrians.
- Adjusting speed based on traffic conditions and road environments.
- Staying extra alert in urban settings, where pedestrian traffic is heaviest.
A Call for Shared Responsibility
Ferguson emphasized the need for cooperation between pedestrians and drivers to create a safer environment.
“We’re all in the same boat. We all have to share the same environment, and we want to try to minimize or reduce the traffic conflicts that we see, not only between motorized vehicles but between vehicles and other forms of transportation. That includes pedestrians that might be on foot or on a bicycle, or anything else for that matter,” Ferguson stated.
Authorities encourage the public to remain aware of their surroundings and to prioritize safety at all times, whether on foot or behind the wheel.
