Running for a Cause: The GJT Runway Run Series Takes Flight

On Saturday, October 27, 2024, the Grand Junction Regional Airport transformed into a vibrant scene as adults, kids, and even dogs took to the runway for the GJT Runway Run Series. This unique event, hosted by the Grand Junction Sports Commission, aimed to raise funds for various local non-profits while providing a fun and engaging experience for participants.

A Unique Running Experience

Typically, the airport runways are reserved for planes, but this event brought a different kind of energy. Participants enjoyed running alongside aircraft, creating a memorable backdrop for the day’s activities.

  • Event Highlights:
    • A 5k run for adults
    • A 2k run for all ages
    • A kids’ 1k race
    • A special 2k run for dogs

Ben Snyder, Executive Director of the Grand Junction Sports Commission, expressed his excitement about the turnout. “It’s a pretty unique opportunity for people,” he noted, praising the incredible weather that added to the event’s success.

Community Support and Non-Profit Collaboration

One of the standout features of the GJT Runway Run was the ability for registrants to choose a non-profit organization to benefit from their registration fees. This collaborative effort included several local organizations, fostering a sense of community and support.

  • Participating Non-Profits:
    • Roice-Hurst Humane Society
    • Girls on the Run
    • United Way
    • Eureka! McConnell Science Museum

Jenna Kretschman, Communications Coordinator for Roice-Hurst, highlighted the importance of this initiative. “Registrants were able to choose a non-profit that their registration fee will benefit,” she explained. This approach not only raised funds but also increased awareness for these organizations.

Looking Ahead: An Annual Tradition?

The success of the GJT Runway Run has sparked hopes for it to become an annual event. Snyder mentioned that the idea originated from a collaboration between several non-profits, which has only grown over time.

  • Future Aspirations:
    • Establishing the run as an annual tradition
    • Continuing to support local non-profits
    • Engaging the community in fun, active events

With the positive response from participants and the community, the Grand Junction Sports Commission is optimistic about the future of this unique fundraising event.
