Grand Junction to Deliver Free Tree Seedlings in Arbor Day Push

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — In celebration of Arbor Day, the City of Grand Junction is launching a free tree seedling giveaway, offering residents up to two seedlings per household, with delivery included for the first 200 participants.

The program officially kicks off at 9 a.m. on April 12, allowing residents to submit their request for home delivery. The initiative is designed to promote urban reforestation, environmental awareness, and public engagement with the city’s open space goals.

“It’s almost like a DoorDash for tree seedlings,” said Rob Davis, the city’s Forester and Open Space Supervisor. “Some places in Japan, instead of medicine, they’ll prescribe time outdoors in nature to lower blood pressure and all these other deep healing properties.”

More Trees, Better Health

The city’s forestry team believes the giveaway is more than just symbolic. Studies have shown that increased tree canopy in urban areas correlates with lower temperatures, improved air quality, and reduced stress among residents.

By simplifying access and including home delivery, city officials hope to encourage planting on private property, extending green coverage beyond public parks and right-of-ways.

For those who don’t make the delivery cutoff, seedlings will also be available at Arbor Fest, scheduled for April 25 at Lincoln Park. The festival will include educational booths, family-friendly activities, and tree-themed giveaways.

The free seedling program is part of Grand Junction’s larger commitment to sustainability and public green space, aligning with regional goals to expand the urban forest and improve environmental resilience.
