Grand Junction police took down a 24-year-old man Saturday night after he allegedly robbed someone at gunpoint on Orchard Avenue, then led officers on a tense standoff, all while his children were riding in the Jeep with him.
Paul Lucero now sits in the Mesa County jail facing nine charges, including aggravated robbery, child abuse, and theft of a firearm.
What Happened on Orchard Avenue
Around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, deputies say Lucero approached a victim in the 2900 block of Orchard Avenue, pulled a gun, and demanded property.
The victim handed over belongings. Lucero jumped back into a green Jeep and sped off.
Witnesses gave a detailed description of the vehicle and direction of travel. Within minutes, Grand Junction police officers spotted the Jeep near 17th Street and Elm Avenue.
High-Risk Stop Turns into 10-Minute Standoff
Officers boxed in the Jeep and ordered Lucero to get out.
He refused.
For ten tense minutes, negotiators worked to get him to surrender. Deputies later confirmed children were inside the vehicle during the entire stop.
Finally, Lucero gave up. Officers took him into custody without further incident.
A search of the Jeep turned up the stolen gun and the victim’s property.
The most disturbing discovery: Lucero’s own kids had been along for the ride the whole time.
Children Safely Reunited with Family
Mesa County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Monday afternoon that the children were unharmed and were immediately turned over to a guardian.
Detectives added two heavy charges because of their presence:
- Child Abuse – Knowingly/Recklessly – No Injury
- Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (Felony 4)

Community Reaction Pouring In

The original post has been shared more than 400 times in less than 24 hours.
This case hits hard in a town where people still wave at strangers and leave doors unlocked. Seeing a father allegedly put his own children in the middle of an armed robbery leaves the community shaken, but grateful for the quick response that brought everyone home safe.
