Grand Junction, Colorado – Hundreds of sparkling dresses, sharp suits, and shiny shoes will soon find new homes as one local nonprofit removes the biggest barrier keeping teens from their prom night: the price tag.
For the second year in a row, Grand Junction Free Promwear is making sure every student who wants to go to prom can go, no matter their bank account.
On March 14 and 15, 2025, any high school student in Mesa County can walk into the Career Center on North Avenue and pick out their dream outfit completely free.
Community Shows Up Big for Donation Drive
Saturday’s drop-off event at the old Hobby Lobby building saw cars lined up for blocks. Mothers brought bags of dresses their daughters wore once. Grandfathers dropped off tuxedos from the 90s that suddenly looked cool again. Even strangers who saw the event on Facebook showed up with trunks full of formalwear.
By the end of the day, volunteers had sorted more than 400 new pieces, pushing the nonprofit’s total inventory past 850 garments and still growing.
Cas Hartter, the driving force behind Grand Junction Free Promwear, couldn’t stop smiling.
“We had people crying in the parking lot because they remembered how much prom meant to them and wanted to pay it forward,” Hartter said. “That’s the moment you realize this is bigger than dresses. This is about giving kids memories.”
Prom Costs Are Out of Control for Many Families
The numbers are brutal.
The national average spent on prom now tops $1,000 per student when you add dress or tux, shoes, hair, tickets, photos, and transportation. In western Colorado, where many families live paycheck to paycheck, dropping $400 on a dress that gets worn once just isn’t possible.
That’s where Grand Junction Free Promwear steps in.
Last year, more than 300 teens walked out with complete outfits. This year organizers expect to serve over 500.

- Dresses size 14 and up
- Dress shoes for guys (sizes 10–15 are almost gone)
- New or gently used jewelry and handbags
You can drop off donations year-round at collection boxes around town or contact them through their Facebook page.
Volunteers are also wanted for sorting parties and the big giveaway weekend.
The Moment That Makes Every Hour Worth It
Ask any volunteer about their favorite part and they all say the same thing: watching a teen step out of the makeshift fitting room in an outfit that makes them feel like a million dollars.
“There is nothing better than seeing a kid who came in nervous and quiet suddenly stand tall, twirl, and say ‘This is the one,’” Hartter said, voice cracking. “That smile. That’s why we lose sleep over this.”
One sophomore last year told volunteers she had decided to skip prom because her family couldn’t afford it. She left with a royal-blue gown, silver heels, and tears running down her cheeks, already texting her friends: “I’m coming after all.”
That’s the real magic happening in an old store on North Avenue.
Grand Junction Free Promwear is proving that in a town this size, community still means everybody gets their night to shine.
