ISP Investigating Officer-Involved Shooting in Grant County

GRANT COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana State Police (ISP) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in Grant County. The incident, which left a man and a Grant County deputy injured, is being handled at the request of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.

What Happened?

At around 8:30 p.m. on December 26, 2024, deputies from the Grant County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence in the 3000 block of East County Road 450 North after receiving reports of a person threatening harm. Upon arriving at the scene, the deputies instructed individuals inside the home to come outside.

ISP reports that 52-year-old Glenn A. Smock exited the residence while armed with a shotgun. Smock then discharged his weapon, striking one of the deputies. In response, the deputies fired their own weapons, hitting Smock.

The Aftermath

After the exchange of gunfire, Smock retreated inside the home and barricaded himself. However, he later exited the residence and was taken into custody without further incident.

Smock received medical treatment at the scene and was subsequently transported by medical helicopter to an area hospital. The deputy who was injured was taken to a local hospital for treatment and has since been released.

Investigation and Protocol

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, in line with standard procedure for officer-involved incidents. The Indiana State Police is leading the investigation, with support from the Grant County Prosecutor’s Office.

Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office for review. Other agencies involved in the response included the Sweetser Police Department, Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Marion Health EMS, Washington Township Volunteer Fire Department, and Samaritan Air.
