Salvation Army Seeks Turkey Donations for Thanksgiving Feast

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – For years, the Salvation Army of Grand Junction has been offering a full Thanksgiving Day meal to anyone in the community who needs it. This annual tradition is a way for the organization to serve and support local residents.

“It feels great. It’s a way the Salvation Army can serve our community. One more step our community can get to do. So this provides help throughout the community whether you are young or old. Salvation army is here to help,” said Major John Tumey.

The Thanksgiving meal includes all the classic fixings – turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, vegetables, cranberry sauce, and pie. Last year, the Salvation Army served over 450 meals on the Western Slope, and they are hoping to feed even more this year.

“We are hoping to get at least 200 turkeys this year. That will feed probably close to 600 people,” Tumey explained.

Calling for Turkey Donations

The Salvation Army is putting out a call for turkey donations to help meet the anticipated demand. Anyone in the community who needs a Thanksgiving meal is welcome to come to the Salvation Army’s location from 10 am to 2 pm on the holiday.

“Anybody in the community that needs a Thanksgiving meal. Let’s say you don’t want to cook, come on down from 10am-2pm. There will be food here. And there will be lots of people here. Lots of volunteers. And you will get served. All the way from your drinks, to your pie, to your dessert, to whatever.”

In addition to the Thanksgiving meal, the Salvation Army is also continuing its annual coat drive, collecting donations of coats, hats, scarves, gloves, and socks to help keep people warm throughout the winter.
