Healing Through Art: VA Western Colorado Prepares for Veterans Creative Arts Festival

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – Veterans in Western Colorado are preparing to showcase their creativity and courage at the upcoming Veterans Creative Arts Festival, a unique event that offers healing, connection, and national recognition.

Where Art Meets Recovery

Hosted by the VA Western Colorado Health Care System, the festival will take place July 24–31 and offers local veterans a stage to express their journeys through music, painting, writing, and other artistic mediums.

More than a showcase, the event is designed as a therapeutic outlet—channeling creative energy into personal healing.

“It’s not just about talent. It’s about transformation. These veterans are using creativity as a way to process experiences many of us will never fully understand,” said a VA spokesperson.

A Gateway to National Recognition

Winners at the local festival will have the opportunity to compete at the National Veterans Creative Arts Festival, a prestigious event co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the American Legion Auxiliary.

The national competition brings together top veteran artists from across the country in a celebration of resilience and expression. Categories range from classical music and country vocals to sculpture, poetry, and digital art.

How to Get Involved

Veterans interested in participating can now pick up application forms at the VA’s main lobby at 2121 North Ave., Grand Junction. Staff are available to help with submissions and answer questions about the process.

All participants must be enrolled in VA health care and submit their work in accordance with guidelines provided at the facility.

More Than Just a Festival

Past participants say the festival has changed their lives.

Some discovered hidden talents. Others finally found a way to express feelings long kept inside.

“This is the first time I felt like someone really heard me—without needing words,” said one veteran artist from a previous year.

In Western Colorado, where many veterans call home, this event serves not just as a showcase—but as a celebration of survival, creativity, and community.
