Ugly Christmas Sweater Fun Run Raises Over 2,000 Pounds of Food for Community Harvest

The 12th annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Fun Run in Fort Wayne exceeded expectations Thursday evening, with participants donating generously and sporting their most festive attire.

More than 350 runners gathered for the event, which has become a beloved tradition. It’s not just about the run, though; the evening’s focus was giving back to the community. Runners jogged three miles while contributing food donations to the Community Harvest Food Bank.

Event Grows in Popularity and Impact

What began as a modest gathering of about 30 people a dozen years ago has evolved into a much larger community event. The Fun Run has become a staple for both seasoned participants and newcomers alike, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds for a good cause.

Carol Dobis, a dedicated participant who has attended all 11 previous runs, shared her excitement about the growth of the event. “The first year there were about thirty people, if that. This year, it’s 350,” Dobis remarked with a smile, noting how the event has expanded over the years.

The increase in participants reflects the growing enthusiasm for the event. And as the numbers grow, so does the amount of food collected. Last year, the event raised over 1,000 pounds of food, but this year, the prediction is even higher.

A Community-Wide Effort

FleetFeet, a local running store, has sponsored the event every year, with Brooks also supporting the initiative. Sara Miller, a trainer at FleetFeet, couldn’t be more proud of the impact the event has had. “Year after year, we’re collecting more and more food for the Community Harvest Food Bank,” Miller said. “Last year, I think we did over 1,000 pounds, and this year I’m predicting we’re going to be over 2,000 pounds.”

This growth not only reflects the increasing turnout but also the generous spirit of the participants. The idea is simple: runners show up in their ugliest Christmas sweaters, take a jog, and donate what they can to help those in need. But the sense of community that it fosters is what makes it truly special.

Participants range from families with children to seasoned athletes, all united in their commitment to giving back. The event brings an air of cheer and goodwill to the heart of Fort Wayne, making it a standout tradition each year.

A Festive Atmosphere for All Ages

The charm of the Ugly Christmas Sweater Fun Run isn’t just the food donations or the three-mile route—it’s the joyous atmosphere that permeates the entire event. Runners of all ages donned their most creative holiday-themed sweaters, with some incorporating blinking lights, oversized reindeer antlers, and tinsel-laden designs.

For many, it’s a fun way to celebrate the season with friends, family, and even strangers who share the same desire to make a difference. “It’s all about the spirit of the holidays,” said one participant, who was wearing a sweater that lit up every time they took a step. “We get to have fun, run for a good cause, and see some wild sweaters along the way.”

Even with the chill of the December air, spirits remained high as participants bundled up in their festive apparel, and organizers ensured the event went off without a hitch.

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Fun Run serves as a reminder of how simple actions, like participating in a community event, can have a profound impact. As the event continues to grow, so too does its potential to make a real difference in the lives of those who rely on the services of organizations like the Community Harvest Food Bank.
