Child Rescued After Falling Through Ice in Allen County Pond

A harrowing incident unfolded in Allen County on Sunday when a child was pulled from a pond after falling through thin ice. Emergency responders raced against time to save the child, who was transported to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition.

Two Children on Thin Ice

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reported that the incident occurred on the 13000 block of Slash Pass, where an eight-year-old and a nine-year-old were playing on a frozen neighborhood pond. Tragically, the eight-year-old fell through the ice.

In a brave attempt to help, the nine-year-old also fell into the frigid water. While the younger child managed to climb out and alert an adult, the situation took a dangerous turn for the older child.

Father’s Desperate Search

The father of the nine-year-old immediately jumped into the chest-deep pond water, searching desperately for his son. Despite his efforts, he was unable to locate the child.

Emergency Response and Rescue

The call for help mobilized several emergency teams, including:

  • Fort Wayne Fire Department: Their Water Rescue team led the recovery effort.
  • West Central Fire District: Provided vital support during the operation.
  • Allen County Sheriff’s Department: Assisted in the search and rescue coordination.

Divers from the Fort Wayne Fire Department eventually located the child and pulled him from the water around 1 p.m.

Ice Safety Reminders

As temperatures fluctuate, the danger of thin ice becomes more pronounced. Ice-related accidents can happen quickly, often with little warning. The DNR has issued critical reminders to ensure safety around frozen water bodies:

  • Avoid walking or playing on ice unless it is tested and verified as safe.
  • Always supervise children near ponds, lakes, or rivers during winter months.
  • If someone falls through the ice:
    • Call 911 immediately.
    • Avoid attempting a rescue without proper training and equipment.

Investigation Underway

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation into the incident, working to piece together details of what happened and how such accidents can be prevented in the future.

Local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and prioritize safety, especially with fluctuating weather conditions posing significant risks to ice stability.
