After Dark’s 34th Annual AIDS Benefit Returns to Fort Wayne This Saturday

The highly anticipated 34th annual AIDS Benefit at After Dark is set to take place this Saturday, bringing together the community for a night of entertainment, awareness, and fundraising. The event, a staple in Fort Wayne’s LGBTQ+ and advocacy circles, promises an evening of dazzling performances and critical fundraising efforts aimed at supporting individuals affected by HIV and AIDS.

A Night of Entertainment with a Purpose

Doors to the After Dark nightclub at 1601 S Harrison St. will open at 6 p.m., with a cabaret show starting at 8 p.m. The main event, featuring more than 30 drag performances, is scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Attendees can expect an energetic and star-studded lineup of local and regional drag artists, each taking the stage to celebrate resilience and raise funds for an important cause.

Beyond the performances, the event will feature a basket auction, allowing attendees to bid on various donated items. Every dollar raised will be directed to Positive Resource Connection, a nonprofit dedicated to HIV/AIDS prevention, testing, and care services.

Grassroots Efforts Amid Funding Challenges

Brandon Blaettner, known on stage as Della Licious, will serve as the evening’s host. He emphasized the increasing importance of local fundraising efforts as federal and state funding for HIV/AIDS services face potential cuts.

“I’ve lost many friends to AIDS,” Blaettner said. “It’s important to me to eradicate the stigma of those who are HIV-positive and educate about preventative measures like safer sex as well as medications that will stop the spread of HIV.”

The AIDS Benefit has remained a vital lifeline for Positive Resource Connection, allowing the organization to maintain its outreach programs despite financial uncertainties.

Raising Awareness and Supporting the Community

The funds raised at this event will directly contribute to several key services, including:

  • Free HIV and STI testing for the Fort Wayne community.
  • Access to preventative medications like PrEP to reduce new HIV infections.
  • Support groups and healthcare navigation for those living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Community education programs aimed at reducing stigma and misinformation.

With continued public support, organizations like Positive Resource Connection can continue to push for better prevention strategies and improved care for those affected by HIV/AIDS.

The Importance of Education and Prevention

Advancements in medicine and treatment have dramatically changed the landscape of HIV/AIDS care, yet misinformation and stigma remain significant barriers. Blaettner expressed optimism about the future but stressed the need for awareness.

“We can end the spread of HIV within our lifetime if people know what measures and medications are available,” he said.

Educational outreach, coupled with community-driven events like the AIDS Benefit, has played a pivotal role in increasing public understanding and breaking down misconceptions.
