Fire at Fort Wayne Apartment Complex Leaves Two Buildings Condemned

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – A fire broke out Friday evening at the Autumn Woods Apartments on the city’s southeast side, causing heavy damage and leading to the condemnation of two buildings. Firefighters responded swiftly, ensuring all residents were safely evacuated.

Firefighters Arrive to a Hidden Threat

Crews from the Fort Wayne Fire Department (FWFD) were dispatched around 7 p.m. to the 2000 block of Carterton Drive following reports of a possible structure fire. Upon arrival, they found no immediate signs of smoke or flames from the outside.

However, once inside, firefighters discovered a small fire near an electrical panel and quickly extinguished it. But that was just the beginning.

Fire Spreads Within the Walls

As firefighters investigated further, they found an active fire hidden within the building’s walls. The flames had extended into the attic, creating a serious threat of spreading further through the complex.

  • Firefighters launched an aggressive response to contain the fire.
  • Efforts were focused on stopping the flames from reaching other buildings.
  • The fire was successfully brought under control by 7:15 p.m.

Residents Evacuated, Buildings Declared Unsafe

All apartments in the complex were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Despite the quick response, the fire left two buildings in such poor condition that officials condemned them.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire. An investigation remains ongoing.
