A new report from the Brookings Institution ranks Fort Wayne among the top metro areas in the country for Black-owned business growth. The city’s entrepreneurial community is thriving, with a 200% increase in Black-owned businesses over five years.
A Surge in Business Growth
Between 2017 and 2022, Fort Wayne saw the addition of 132 Black-owned businesses, marking a significant expansion. This rapid growth placed the city fifth nationwide among large metro areas.
Local leaders attribute this success to a mix of individual determination and community support.
Leaders Applaud the Achievement
Mayor Sharon Tucker celebrated the ranking, crediting the entrepreneurs who took the leap to start their own businesses.
“The credit for this lies with the local entrepreneurs who have had the courage to pursue their dreams and build a business here,” Tucker said. She also highlighted the role of support networks, such as:
- The Black Chamber of Commerce
- Greater Fort Wayne Inc.
- Brightpoint Development Fund
- The City of Fort Wayne’s Summit City Entrepreneur and Enterprise District (SEED)
A Testament to Community Efforts
John Urbahns, president and CEO of Greater Fort Wayne Inc., emphasized the role of strategic partnerships and resource accessibility in driving business success.
“At Greater Fort Wayne Inc., we are committed to fostering an environment where businesses of all backgrounds can start, grow, and thrive,” Urbahns said. “This remarkable increase highlights the impact of strategic partnerships, access to resources, and the determination of Black entrepreneurs who are strengthening our local economy.”
The ranking is seen as a milestone, but local leaders say efforts will continue to expand opportunities and resources for aspiring business owners.
