Fort Wayne Curling Club Expands into Lawn Bowling with New Initiative

The Fort Wayne Curling Club is rolling out a fresh sporting experience for northeast Indiana. On Monday, the club announced plans to introduce lawn bowling, adding another precision sport to its offerings.

Lawn bowling—widely played in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand—is set to bring a mix of competition and leisure to the region. With similarities to curling and bocce, it challenges players to roll weighted balls toward a small target ball, known as a jack, aiming for precision over power.

A Year-Round Sporting Hub

Craig Fischer, president and co-founder of the Fort Wayne Curling Club, emphasized the sport’s broad appeal.

“We are committed to making lawn bowls accessible to everyone, just as we have done with curling, and we are excited to extend our adaptive programs year-round,” Fischer said.

Lawn bowling will be housed under the newly established Fort Wayne Lawn Bowls Club, a division of the curling club. The season will run from April through September, complementing the curling season, which operates from September through April.

More Than Just a Retirement Sport

Despite common perceptions, lawn bowling isn’t just for retirees. Fischer noted its growing popularity among younger players and families. The club aims to create a welcoming, relaxed atmosphere that caters to all ages and skill levels.

  • Families and individuals will have the chance to participate in casual games and leagues.
  • Corporate and private events will be offered, making the sport a unique option for team-building activities.
  • Adaptive programs will ensure accessibility for individuals with disabilities and senior citizens.

The club also plans to include croquet in its offerings, further expanding its recreational opportunities.

Building the Perfect Venue

To bring the vision to life, a dedicated lawn bowling green will be built at 3837 N. Wells St. The space is designed to provide an optimal playing surface while fostering a social and inclusive environment.

Construction efforts are already in motion, but funding remains a key focus. Community members and local businesses are encouraged to contribute to the project, helping to cover development costs.

Community Support and Future Plans

The Fort Wayne Curling Club has a history of growing niche sports in the region, and this new initiative is expected to follow suit. With lawn bowling’s mix of strategy, skill, and social engagement, the club believes it will quickly find a home in northeast Indiana.

Fischer remains confident that the initiative will not only introduce a new sport to the area but also strengthen community ties.
