Local Firefighter Stresses Importance of Smoke Detectors After House Fire

A Fort Wayne homeowner narrowly escaped a dangerous fire thanks to her dog, Enzo. The incident, which occurred early Monday morning, has sparked renewed discussion about the critical need for working smoke detectors in every home.

A Dog’s Heroic Act Saves His Owner

Lieutenant Timothy Brocher with the West Central Fire District says the fire could have had a much worse outcome if not for Enzo’s quick actions.

“The homeowner did not wake up to any smoke alarms or anything like that and was woken up by the dog, which initially saved her life,” Brocher explained. “If she hadn’t woken up, it could have been much more serious.”

Firefighters Urge Residents to Check Their Alarms

Firefighters emphasize that while Enzo’s actions were remarkable, homeowners should not rely on pets to alert them in an emergency. They stress the importance of regularly checking smoke detectors and ensuring they are functional.

  • Test smoke alarms every month to ensure they are working properly.
  • Replace batteries every two months to maintain reliability.
  • Smoke alarms older than ten years should be replaced entirely.
  • Install a carbon monoxide detector for additional safety.

Firefighters Provide Free Smoke Detectors

Recognizing the homeowner’s lack of working alarms, firefighters returned the following day to install smoke detectors in her home. They remind the community that help is available for those in need of smoke detectors.

“If you need a smoke detector, contact your local fire department,” Brocher said. “They’ll install it for you.”
