Katy Hernandez, a 26-year-old Fort Wayne woman, is gearing up for a dual-purpose event that combines a baby shower with a fundraising initiative, all while navigating the fight of her life: cancer.
A Life-Changing Diagnosis at Five Months Pregnant
Two months ago, Hernandez was in the middle of a pregnancy filled with anticipation and excitement. But her world was rocked when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. At just five months pregnant, the diagnosis hit like a tidal wave, shattering her expectations and forcing her to grapple with the harsh reality of a life-threatening illness while preparing to become a mother.
“I was still wrapping my head around the pregnancy,” Katy said. “Then, to hear I had cancer – it was a lot to take in.”
Despite the emotional and physical toll, Hernandez’s determination has been unwavering. Now, at seven months pregnant, she’s pushing forward with a mixture of grit and optimism, having completed her final round of chemotherapy. “As of right now we’re doing good,” she shared. “I feel good, baby bump is getting bigger, he is moving, he is kicking, we have eight more weeks to go.” The strength she displays is as inspiring as it is humbling, especially considering the ongoing medical battle she faces.
A Fundraiser with a Purpose: More Than Just a Celebration
On May 16th, Hernandez and her fiancé, Shawn Reason, will host a special community event. Part baby shower, part fundraiser, the event is designed to celebrate both the upcoming arrival of their child and raise funds to assist with medical costs related to her cancer treatment. The couple hopes the event serves not just as a celebration, but as a reminder of the power of community and the importance of coming together in times of hardship.
“She does a lot for the community, and she’s very kind to everybody she meets,” Reason explained. “And I just want the same for her. I want people to be kind and do what they can, and just be aware of cancer.”
For Hernandez, the support has been a lifeline. “It feels good to know people are behind us,” she said. “I never expected so much kindness.”
Community Rallies Around Hernandez
The event, which will be held at a local venue, is expected to draw a large crowd. Local businesses have already stepped up to donate items for a raffle, and several of Hernandez’s friends and family members have volunteered their time to help with organizing the fundraiser. Even in the midst of such an overwhelming journey, Hernandez has been a beacon of light for the community, earning admiration from those around her for her perseverance and grace.
It’s not just the event that speaks to the strength of the community, but the constant support she’s received. From offering rides to doctor appointments to organizing fundraisers, Hernandez has witnessed the very essence of what it means to stand together. And while the financial burden of medical expenses is daunting, the emotional support has been a crucial part of her fight.
“There are days when it feels like too much, but then I think about my baby,” she said. “And I know I have to keep going.”
The Power of Hope and Resilience
While Hernandez’s battle with cancer is far from over, her resolve has only grown stronger. In addition to her chemotherapy treatments, the upcoming birth of her child provides a sense of purpose that fuels her every day. The fundraiser is more than just a financial necessity—it’s a symbol of hope and a testament to her resilience.
In a way, the fundraiser encapsulates everything Hernandez stands for: love, family, community, and strength. “It’s all about hope,” she said. “No matter what, I’m fighting for both of us.”
Despite the challenges, Hernandez remains focused on the future. “I know the road ahead won’t be easy, but I’m ready for whatever comes,” she said. “With my baby and my community by my side, I know we’ll get through this.”
