Indiana Tech’s women’s basketball team was riding high after two big wins in Fort Wayne, securing their place in the NAIA Round of 16. But their journey to Sioux City, Iowa, for the next stage of the tournament turned into an unexpected adventure.
On Wednesday morning, the team set out on the final leg of their trip. Just 35 miles from their hotel in Sioux City, their progress came to a sudden halt. A powerful blizzard had blanketed the roads, shutting down the highway and leaving the team stranded with no clear path forward.
A Local Coach Opens His Doors
As the blizzard raged on, the team needed a safe place to wait out the storm. That’s when Jeff Pratt, head coach of the West Monona girls’ basketball team, stepped in. He and his wife welcomed the stranded players and staff into their home, offering them shelter and warmth for most of the day.
Neighbors pitched in as well, providing food and supplies to make the team as comfortable as possible. The hospitality from the Iowa community turned an otherwise stressful situation into an uplifting experience.
Bonds That Will Last Beyond the Game
Indiana Tech coach Jessie Biggs expressed deep gratitude for the unexpected kindness.
“We’ll be friends and communicate with them forever,” Biggs said. “We already said, if we’re ever back in Sioux City or come up here in the next couple years, we’re just going to stop, a planned dinner at their place.”
The experience, while unplanned, left a lasting impact on both the team and their newfound hosts. It was a moment that reminded everyone involved that sports are about more than just competition—they’re about community, resilience, and unexpected connections.
Road to the Round of 16 Continues
Eventually, as conditions improved, Indiana Tech was able to resume its journey. By Wednesday night, they reached Sioux City safely, ready to shift their focus back to the tournament.
Now, the Warriors turn their attention to their next challenge: a matchup against second-seed Freed-Hardeman University in the NAIA Round of 16. The game is set for Friday at 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET).
Whether they win or lose, one thing is certain: their trip to Sioux City will be a story they never forget.
