Leo-Cedarville is about to shine a little brighter this holiday season as Riverside Gardens Park unveils a new festive display. With 40 illuminated Christmas scenes, “Illuminating Leo: A Walk-Through Holiday Lights Tradition” promises to become a cherished local holiday tradition, offering a free, family-friendly experience beginning November 21 and running through January 6.
Kick-Off Ceremony to Feature Bicentennial Dedication
The lights will officially debut with a special opening ceremony on November 21 at 5 p.m., marked by the dedication of the “I” Am Allen sculpture—part of Allen County’s bicentennial celebrations. The new public artwork, located at Riverside Gardens Park, is intended to celebrate local heritage. Attendees can look forward to speeches from Allen County Commissioners and representatives from the Town of Leo-Cedarville, NewAllen Alliance, Visit Fort Wayne, and the Leo-Cedarville Foundation.
Public Art to Enrich Community Experience
The addition of public art to Riverside Gardens Park is more than just visual; it’s a cultural statement. “Public art is a powerful mechanism for educating, storytelling, and capturing our history,” explains Alex Hall, the lead planner behind the bicentennial sculpture. Hall sees the sculpture as a medium to foster community pride and to provide visitors with a glimpse into the shared stories of Allen County. He emphasizes that initiatives like these not only enhance cultural awareness but also contribute to the area’s quality of life.
Economic and Cultural Impact of Public Art
According to community leaders, public art initiatives like the “I” Am Allen project do more than beautify—they act as catalysts for economic growth and community engagement. Hall points to data showing that public art installations attract visitors, encourage local spending, and create a sense of belonging for residents. “These sculptures help make our county a wonderful place to call home,” he noted, emphasizing that they’re as much about community pride as they are about fostering a welcoming environment for newcomers.
