Liberty Parks MotoGP on Formula 1’s Austin Stage
Liberty Media is putting MotoGP’s last 1000cc bikes in front of Formula 1’s Austin crowd for 20 minutes on October 24.
MotoGP will send four 1000cc prototypes onto Formula 1’s Austin circuit on Saturday, October 24, for a 20-minute run before Free Practice 3. Dani Pedrosa, Nicolo Bulega, Andrea Dovizioso and Lorenzo Savadori will lap Circuit of the Americas from 11:40am to 12:00pm CDT (5:40pm to 6pm in the UK), a window MotoGP is selling to a crowd it says should top 400,000 across the United States Grand Prix. Liberty Media, which owns both championships, is putting two-wheel machinery in front of a four-wheel audience while the MotoGP grid races the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island.
Liberty Media Bought the Other Paddock First
This is not a chance crossover between two independent series that happen to share a Texas track. Liberty Media completed its acquisition of Dorna on July 3, 2025, and folded MotoGP into the same Formula One Group that already holds Formula 1 and the events firm Quint. Liberty took about 84% of Dorna. Dorna management kept 16%.
Carmelo Ezpeleta stayed as chief executive in Madrid. Fifteen months later, the first time MotoGP machinery will appear during a Formula 1 grand prix weekend is at Circuit of the Americas, the one venue both series already use. Formula 1 races there in October. MotoGP races there in spring.
On October 6, after the Grand Prix of Japan, Liberty Media chief executive Derek Chang and Ezpeleta visited Yamaha headquarters in Iwata with vice chief executive Carlos Ezpeleta. They met Yamaha Motor president Motofumi Shitara and talked about keeping the factories inside a championship the American owner now carries on the same ledger as Formula 1. The Austin demo is that ownership showing up on a Saturday timetable.
THE LIBERTY PATH TO AUSTIN
- March 29, 2024: Liberty Media signs the share purchase agreement for Dorna Sports.
- June 23, 2025: The European Commission gives unconditional approval to the deal.
- July 3, 2025: Liberty closes, taking about 84% of Dorna, with management holding 16%.
- October 6, 2026: Chang and the Ezpeletas meet Yamaha’s president in Iwata.
- October 20, 2026: MotoGP announces the Austin demonstration for the Formula 1 weekend.
- October 24, 2026: Four prototypes run at Circuit of the Americas from 11:40am to 12:00pm CDT.
- April 23-25, 2027: MotoGP’s own United States round is listed back at the same circuit.
The company that paid for both paddocks is now using the louder American crowd to advertise the quieter one.
A 20-Minute Hole Before Free Practice 3
Formula 1’s published Austin timetable still does not name the bikes. It does leave them a gap. Porsche Carrera Cup North America qualifies at 09:10. The Masters Historic field gets a 25-minute race from 10:10 to 10:40. Then the track goes quiet until the third practice session at 12:30. MotoGP has parked four premier-class machines on Saturday in that hole, from 11:40am to 12:00pm CDT, for high-speed laps ahead of the cars.
SATURDAY’S GAP ON THE F1 TIMETABLE
| Local time | Session |
|---|---|
| 09:10-09:40 | Porsche Carrera Cup qualifying |
| 10:10-10:40 | Masters Historic first race |
| 11:40-12:00 | MotoGP demonstration |
| 12:30-13:30 | Formula 1 Free Practice 3 |
| 16:00-17:00 | Formula 1 qualifying |
Circuit of the Americas opens the gates at 8:30am on Saturday. Qualifying starts at 4pm. The grand prix itself is Sunday, October 25, at 3pm local time, 56 laps of the 5.513-kilometre circuit. The bikes get the length of a support-race warm-up, then they leave so the cars can start FP3 on time.
MotoGP says the prototypes can exceed 225 mph, lean more than 60 degrees, and make more than 130 decibels. That is the product Liberty wants a Formula 1 grandstand to hear in person, because a television graphic will not do it.
Why the Championship Grid Is in Australia
The current MotoGP riders cannot be in Austin because they are racing the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island on the same weekend, October 23 to 25. It is the last premier-class race at that circuit before the championship moves the Australian round to a new Adelaide street track in 2027. Test riders and a World Superbike champion going to MotoGP next year are available. The people who actually score points this season are not.
That calendar clash is why the first joint Formula 1 weekend does not include Marc Marquez, or whoever leads the championship in late October. Liberty still gets the sound of a 1000cc prototype around the same stadium section Formula 1 uses, in front of a crowd MotoGP could not assemble on its own spring date. The racing that defines the series happens 8,000 miles away, overnight for Texas.
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing spent October 20 telling Formula 1 fans that Pedrosa is bringing the RC16 to Circuit of the Americas, and to watch for extra content from Austin. The official championship account posted the same pitch under the line “Two wheels meet four.” The people who would usually fill those seats for a MotoGP race at this track are being asked to care about a support slot on someone else’s Saturday.
Pedrosa, Bulega and a Borrowed Spotlight
The four names are a Hall of Fame rider, a 2027 signing, and two test riders. None of them is in this year’s title fight. Bulega is the one Liberty can point at when it asks Austin to come back in April, because he will be on the grid then for Pertamina Enduro VR46 Racing Team. Pedrosa is the one a Formula 1 crowd might actually recognise.
THE FOUR RIDERS ON TRACK
| Rider | Bike | Job in Austin |
|---|---|---|
| Dani Pedrosa | KTM | Hall of Fame, KTM test rider |
| Nicolo Bulega | Ducati | 2027 VR46 rider, WorldSBK champion |
| Andrea Dovizioso | Yamaha | MotoGP test rider |
| Lorenzo Savadori | SuperFile Trackhouse | MotoGP test rider |
Pedrosa won three Grand Prix world titles in 125cc and 250cc and now tests for KTM. Dovizioso, a former Ducati factory rider, tests for Yamaha. Savadori rides for SuperFile Trackhouse, the American team on an American Formula 1 weekend. Bulega arrives as the current WorldSBK world champion with Ducati and as a MotoGP rider for 2027.
MotoGP teams and riders will be on site from Thursday through Sunday, even though the on-track piece lasts 20 minutes. Circuit of the Americas opens Thursday, October 22, before Formula 1’s racing days of October 23 to 25. The extra days are for the Fan Zone, not for more laps.
These 1000cc Prototypes Are Already on Borrowed Time
The machines Austin will hear are the current 1000cc generation. In 2027 the premier class cuts capacity to 850cc, drops maximum bore from 81mm to 75mm, bans ride-height devices, tightens the aerodynamics, and switches from Michelin to Pirelli. Fuel tanks shrink. The fuel itself must be 100% non-fossil. Factories have already been running the new prototypes in closed tests, including at Jerez in early October.
So the first time Formula 1’s Austin crowd meets a MotoGP bike, it meets a specification the rulebook is about to retire. Liberty is showing the loud version, then asking those same people to buy tickets for a different bike six months later.
WHAT CHANGES ON THE 2027 BIKES
- Capacity: Premier-class engines drop from 1000cc to 850cc.
- Bore: Maximum cylinder bore falls from 81mm to 75mm.
- Ride height: Holeshot and ride-height devices are banned.
- Tyres and fuel: Pirelli replaces Michelin, and the fuel must be 100% non-fossil.
Ducati Corse chief Gigi Dall’Igna has said the point of the cut is not lap time. It is the speed at which riders arrive at the first corner. Massimo Rivola at Aprilia has pointed at the 368.6 km/h runs Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin recorded at Mugello in May as the problem the new rules are meant to cool. Austin will still get the old noise.
What Austin Fans Are Being Sold for April
MotoGP’s own United States round returns to Circuit of the Americas from April 23 to 25, 2027, the fifth weekend of a 22-race calendar that also adds Buenos Aires and an Adelaide street race. COTA already lists that MotoGP round on April 23-25 on its public calendar, under the Red Bull Grand Prix of the United States title. The circuit has been MotoGP’s American home since 2013. Formula 1 has the same asphalt in October, with a contract now running through 2034.
Bulega is the rider who says the quiet part. He is not in Texas to win a Formula 1 support race. He is there to preview a MotoGP grid slot at the same venue next spring.
This is a fantastic opportunity to put MotoGP in front of one of the biggest crowds in world motorsport. The atmosphere at COTA is always incredible, and to ride a MotoGP bike in front of so many fans will be a special experience. MotoGP bikes are unlike anything else, and hopefully the laps will show just how spectacular our sport is. We’re looking forward to putting on a great show and giving fans a glimpse of what they can expect when I return with MotoGP to Austin in 2027.
Nicolo Bulega, 2027 VR46 rider, MotoGP statement
That is the conversion brief. Take a Formula 1 ticket holder who has never stood over a 1000cc prototype, give them 20 minutes of lean angle and exhaust, then sell the April date before the 850cc bikes arrive.
The Fan Zone Cannot Replace a Home Grand Prix
Beside the laps, MotoGP will run a dedicated Fan Zone display all weekend with the four motorcycles that go on track. Pedrosa, who knows this circuit as a rider and now as a KTM tester, is being used as the familiar voice for people who came for Oscar Piastri or Lando Norris and will leave with a MotoGP lanyard if the pitch works.
It’s always special to ride a MotoGP bike at COTA, one of the most iconic circuits in the world. The United States Grand Prix is a truly unique and special event on the F1 calendar, attracting an incredible crowd and providing a great opportunity to give fans a taste of what makes MotoGP so exciting. The speed, the sound and the performance of these bikes is something you have to experience in person, and I’m looking forward to sharing that with everyone in Austin.
Dani Pedrosa, KTM test rider, MotoGP statement
Twenty minutes of sound will not teach a Formula 1 crowd how a MotoGP race weekend actually works. It will not explain a sprint, a qualifying tyre, or why the championship only stops in the United States once a year. The honest test is whether anyone who hears Pedrosa on Saturday buys a grandstand for April, when the 850cc bikes and the full grid finally belong to this circuit again.

After 12:00pm the four machines move to the Fan Zone, and Formula 1 Free Practice 3 starts at 12:30. MotoGP’s own race at this track is dated April 23-25, 2027.
