Scope of this policy

This policy describes what Budgy App collects when you read budgyapp.com, why, who else sees it and what you can do about it. It covers the website and any newsletter we may send from it, but not other sites we link to, which have their own policies.

We publish for an international audience and have no home country, so this policy is written to work for a reader anywhere. Where a particular law gives you specific rights, they are described in plain terms below.

What we collect when you read

Reading the site produces the same server records any website produces: your IP address, the page requested, the time, the page you came from and the browser and device type your software reports. These logs exist so the site can be served, defended against abuse and repaired. They are kept for a short, fixed period, then discarded, and are not joined to any identity.

We use an analytics tool to count visits and see which stories are read, for how long and on what kind of device. It is configured to shorten IP addresses and not to build profiles of individual readers, so the result is aggregate.

What we collect when you write to us

When you email support@budgyapp.com we receive whatever you send: your address, your name if you sign it and the content of the message. Mail is kept for as long as it is useful for the purpose you sent it. Messages from confidential sources are handled under the stricter rules on our contact page.

If we offer a newsletter and you subscribe, we store the address you gave us and a record of the subscription. Every message carries an unsubscribe link.

Cookies and similar technologies

We set a small number of cookies ourselves to remember preferences and to keep our visitor counts honest. Advertising delivered through the network we use may set cookies of its own to select banners based on your browsing across other sites. The cookie policy lists the categories and describes how to refuse them. Where the law where you live requires consent for non-essential cookies, they are not set until you give it.

Advertising and the partner involved

Budgy App is funded by display advertising served through the Adsterra network. When a banner loads, the network receives technical information about the request, such as the page address, the device type, an approximate location derived from your IP address and a cookie identifier, so it can decide which banner to show and record that it was shown. It may use that information to build interest profiles across the sites it serves.

We do not send the network your name, your email address or the content of your messages. You can limit interest-based advertising through the consent controls on the site, your browser settings and the industry opt-out mechanisms in your region. Doing so does not remove ads; it makes them less targeted.

How we use what we hold

We use reader data to serve the site, measure it, keep it secure, answer your mail, send messages you asked for and comply with the law. We do not sell reader data, we do not use it for profiling, and we do not use it for any purpose unrelated to publishing this site.

For readers in places that require a legal basis for processing, the bases are our legitimate interest in operating, securing and measuring the site in aggregate; your consent for non-essential cookies and for any newsletter; our need to answer when you write and expect a reply; and legal obligation for the narrow remainder.

Readers in the European Union and the United Kingdom

If you are in the European Union, the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, applies to how we handle your data. If you are in the United Kingdom, the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act apply. In plain terms, these laws give you the right to know what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to certain uses, to restrict processing, to receive a copy in a usable format and to complain to your national data protection authority.

We are not established in either place and make no claim to be. We honour these rights for readers there anyway, because the laws reach publishers who serve those readers.

Readers in California and other US states

If you live in California, the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act, usually written CCPA/CPRA, gives you the right to know what personal information is collected about you, to delete it, to correct it and to opt out of its sale or sharing for targeted advertising.

We do not sell personal information. Advertising cookies set by the network may count as sharing under California’s definition, and you can opt out through the cookie controls on the site or by sending the Global Privacy Control signal, which we honour everywhere as a refusal of non-essential cookies. We do not treat you differently for exercising any right.

International transfers and other recipients

Because our readers and providers are in many countries, data we hold may be processed outside the country where you live. Where a transfer is governed by rules such as those of the European Union or the United Kingdom, we rely on the safeguards those rules recognise, including standard contractual terms.

Our hosting, email and analytics providers process some data on our behalf, and the advertising network processes some for its own purposes as described above. We disclose data to law enforcement or courts only when legally compelled, we challenge requests that seek to identify sources or that appear overbroad, and we tell you about a request for your data unless prohibited from doing so.

How to exercise your rights

Wherever you live, write to support@budgyapp.com with PRIVACY in the subject line and say what you want. We confirm receipt within two business days and answer within the period the applicable law allows, usually much sooner. We may need to verify that you are the person the data concerns before acting.

Children

This site is written for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or under the higher age that applies where you live, and if you believe a child has sent us personal information, write to us and it will be deleted.

Retention, security and changes

Server logs are kept for weeks, not years. Analytics data is kept in aggregate. Mail is kept for as long as its purpose lasts, and subscriber addresses until you unsubscribe. We use encryption in transit and restrict access to systems holding reader data to the people who need it.

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affects your data we will notify you as the law requires and, in practice, sooner. When this policy changes in a way that matters, the change is dated at the top of the page and announced on the site before it takes effect.
