Pet adoptions slow down during the festive period, impacting furry friends looking for homes
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – As the holiday season approaches, the thought of gifting a furry friend as a present might cross many people’s minds. However, Roice-Hurst Humane Society is cautioning potential pet adopters that this time of year often sees a slowdown in adoptions, both locally and nationally.
A Seasonal Slowdown for Pet Adoptions
According to Roice-Hurst Humane Society, pet adoptions typically slow down as the holiday season sets in. While this trend is seen nationwide, local factors in Grand Junction also contribute to this seasonal dip.
Jenna Kretschman, Communications Coordinator for Roice-Hurst, explained that the key factor behind this slowdown is the cost of care. “It’s difficult for people to find affordable pet-friendly housing that will allow them to not only keep their pet but add another pet to the family. And those are some reasons we actually see animals coming into the shelter as well,” she said. This makes adopting pets a tough decision for many families, especially during a time when budgets are stretched with holiday expenses.
Fewer Kittens and Other Challenges
In addition to the financial challenges, Roice-Hurst members also noted that there is typically a decrease in the birth of kittens during the colder months, which can contribute to fewer available pets during the holiday season. However, the Humane Society is offering several options to assist families who may not be in a position to adopt a pet permanently but still want to help.
Holiday Adoption Options
For those who may want to gift a pet without fully committing to adoption, Roice-Hurst offers adoption vouchers. These vouchers allow loved ones to receive a pet as a gift, with the option to finalize the adoption later when they are better able to provide a home for their new furry companion.
“We understand that not every family is in a position to adopt right away,” Kretschman added. “Adoption vouchers allow people to still give the gift of a pet while ensuring the new owners are prepared for the responsibility.”
Helping the Community
Roice-Hurst Humane Society continues to focus on matching pets with their perfect homes, but they also emphasize the importance of responsible adoption. Families looking to adopt during the holiday season are encouraged to consider the long-term commitment involved in caring for a pet.
The organization is committed to helping both pets and potential adopters find the best fit, providing information and resources for those looking to adopt or even support the shelter in other ways.
