The spirit of giving was in full swing on December 14, 2024, as local business WheelinGals teamed up with The Salvation Army and first responders in Grand Junction, Colorado, for a “Fill-A-Truck” Toy Drive. The event aimed to bring joy to children and seniors in need during the holiday season.
A Personal Mission of Giving Back
Amanda Latz, the founder of WheelinGals, has a deeply personal connection to the cause. Recalling a time when she relied on community support to provide Christmas gifts for her own children, Latz was inspired to pay it forward.
“There were a couple years early on when I was a parent that I did need some help, and Salvation Army was one of the resources I tapped into,” Latz shared. “It feels good to now be in a position to give back to the first responders and the community, gathering toys for kids.”
Supporting Over 2,000 Local Families
John Tumey, Core Officer for The Salvation Army in Grand Junction, emphasized the importance of collaboration in making the toy drive a success.
“We’re helping over 2,000 kids and seniors this year, and it takes everybody to help. The Salvation Army cannot do it alone,” said Tumey. “These partnerships with community members and local businesses show the kids that someone cares about them.”
The Grand Junction Police Department and Mesa County Search and Rescue also participated, fostering connections between first responders and the community.
Bridging the Gap Between Communities
The event goes beyond holiday cheer, serving as a bridge between the community and first responders.
“I had this brainchild of connecting the charitable aspect of helping the community with creating stronger ties between first responders and community members,” said Latz.
Plans for Future Events
With this year’s toy drive a success, Latz has already set her sights on future initiatives. She plans to host another community event in May 2025 in partnership with local law enforcement.
“I do all the things I do because I like to have peace of mind that every day, I’m working toward leaving the world a better place than I found it,” Latz explained.
A Season of Giving
The “Fill-A-Truck” Toy Drive exemplifies the collective power of community, business, and public service coming together to make a difference. With over 2,000 children and seniors feeling the warmth of the season, this partnership has proven the enduring impact of compassion and collaboration.
