Grand Mesa’s Skyway Trail is a beloved destination for skiers, and now it’s set to become even better. By next winter, the trail will host a brand-new warming shelter and community hub, aptly named Skyway Station.
A Shelter for All Seasons
The Grand Mesa Nordic Council (GMNC) has unveiled plans for Skyway Station, a multilevel facility designed to enhance the experience for local skiers and visitors alike.
“It really distinguishes that we’re not really a ski resort… We’re a ski community,” explained Christie Aschwanden, Executive Director of GMNC.
The building will include a warming shelter with a wood stove, a changing room for skiers, and much-needed storage space for grooming equipment.
Security and Storage Upgrades
The inclusion of secure storage is a critical aspect of the project. Aschwanden noted that last spring, the council faced a troubling incident.
“A snowmobile was stolen. So it’s not just a security issue. It’s also about protecting our equipment,” she shared.
This addition will ensure that valuable grooming tools and machinery are safely stored, benefiting the entire skiing community.
Funding the Vision
Skyway Station’s total cost is estimated at $1.3 million, with a significant portion raised through donations. Colorado Gives Day proved instrumental in funding the project, bringing the council closer to its goal.
“We’re about 85% of the way there, so we still have $230,000 to raise,” Aschwanden said.
Supporters can continue contributing to help make the vision a reality.
Construction Timeline
Groundbreaking is scheduled for the summer of 2025, once the snow has melted. The GMNC anticipates completing the building in time for the 2025-2026 ski season, ensuring skiers have a warm, welcoming space for their adventures.
