S.R. 114 in North Manchester to Close Temporarily for Water Main Repairs

Planned closure between Sycamore and Merkle Streets begins May 12; drivers advised to follow detour routes

NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (May 6, 2025) – Motorists traveling through North Manchester next week should prepare for a short-term but potentially disruptive road closure on State Road 114, as essential underground infrastructure work gets underway.

According to officials, a section of S.R. 114 between Sycamore Street and Merkle Street will shut down beginning Sunday, May 12, to allow for water main construction.

Water Infrastructure Takes Priority

The closure comes as part of a scheduled improvement project targeting aging water infrastructure beneath the state-maintained route. Crews will begin excavation and pipe replacement early next week, with completion anticipated by the end of the week, though weather conditions could push timelines further out.

“While we always hope for a quick turnaround, we build flexibility into the schedule due to the unpredictable nature of Indiana spring weather,” a town public works spokesperson said. “We’re asking for patience as we improve service reliability for residents and businesses.”

Official Detour Announced

To accommodate the work, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has marked a formal detour that reroutes traffic via State Road 105, State Road 16, and State Road 13.

While these routes will remain fully operational throughout the closure, local drivers are also encouraged to find alternate paths if familiar with neighborhood streets, especially during peak school or business commute hours.

Road Safety Reminders for Drivers

During the construction period, town officials and INDOT are emphasizing safety within and near the work zone. Motorists are being urged to:

  • Slow down when approaching the closure area

  • Avoid distractions, including mobile phone use

  • Follow posted signs and detour markings

  • Allow extra travel time during the morning and evening rush

“Work zones are for people—our crews, inspectors, and engineers. We want everyone to get home safely,” INDOT’s district engineer said in a statement.

Community Impact: Short-Term Pain for Long-Term Gain

Though only covering a few blocks, this specific segment of S.R. 114 serves as a local commuter route and a minor freight corridor, meaning the closure will likely cause moderate traffic disruptions during the school and business week.

Local businesses along the route, while remaining open, are preparing for lower foot traffic and encouraging customers to use side entrances and nearby parking.

“We’re used to these short-term projects,” said a Sycamore Street bakery owner. “It’s inconvenient for a few days, but the water upgrades are overdue. We just hope the rain holds off.”

Weather Remains a Wildcard

As with most spring infrastructure projects in the Midwest, progress is largely weather-dependent. Heavy rainfall or unseasonable cold could slow excavation and delay repaving.

Town and INDOT officials plan to monitor forecasts closely and provide day-by-day updates via the 21Alive News App and the town’s social media pages.
