Fort Wayne Zoo Kicks Off 60th Season with New Name, Animals, and Attractions

The Fort Wayne Zoo is back for its 60th season, and it’s bringing big changes. From a fresh name to new exhibits and special events, there’s plenty to explore this year.

A Name That Reflects More Than Just Children

One of the most notable changes this year is the zoo’s new name. Formerly called the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo, the attraction is now simply the Fort Wayne Zoo. Zoo Executive Director Rick Schuiteman explained the reasoning behind the switch, emphasizing inclusivity.

“This new name will better reflect who we are and what we do, and our mission won’t change,” Schuiteman said. “We are more than a zoo for children, we are a zoo for all.”

The decision was made to attract a broader audience and showcase the zoo’s conservation efforts and expansion plans.

Meet Kiume: The Zoo’s New Lion

Visitors can now catch a glimpse of Kiume, a male lion who recently joined lioness Ina. Kiume arrived from the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids and is already settling into his new home.

He’s not the only new face at the zoo this year. Jasper, a snowy owl, has also made his debut. And for those interested in marine life, the zoo has added new fish and sharks to its aquarium exhibit.

Glo Wild: A Lantern Spectacle

For a limited time, the zoo is hosting a special event called “Glo Wild,” featuring enormous, illuminated animal displays throughout the park. The exhibit runs until May 26 and offers a unique nighttime experience for visitors.

Expect to see:

  • Massive, glowing animal figures spread across the zoo
  • A dazzling mix of colors and lights creating an immersive atmosphere
  • A family-friendly event perfect for evening strolls

Coastal Cove: A Look Ahead

Later this year, the Fort Wayne Zoo will unveil its highly anticipated Coastal Cove exhibit. This new area will become home to California sea lions and two harbor seals, expanding the zoo’s marine life offerings.

Visitors can expect an up-close experience with these animals, learning about their habitats and conservation.

New Events and Fan Favorites Return

The zoo is also introducing fresh events while bringing back crowd-pleasers.

  • Easter Bunny Brunch: A brand-new event where kids can enjoy an Easter egg hunt and brunch at the zoo.
  • Rock and Roar: The adults-only event returns, offering live music, drinks, and a lively atmosphere.
  • Monthly Special Events: Each month, the zoo will roll out something different to keep guests coming back.
