Grand Junction is buzzing with excitement as the Home Improvement and Remodeling Expo celebrates its historic 50th year this Saturday and Sunday at the Grand Junction Convention Center. More than 60 local companies will fill the halls with fresh ideas, cutting-edge products, and real people ready to help Western Colorado homeowners finally tackle those long-overdue projects.
Five Decades of Turning Houses into Dream Homes
What started in 1974 as a small gathering of builders and suppliers has grown into the biggest home-focused event on the Western Slope. Organized every year by the Home Builders Association of Western Colorado, the expo has helped thousands of families remodel kitchens, add solar panels, finish basements, and completely transform outdated properties.
Shayna Heiney, Executive Officer of the HBA, can barely contain her pride. “Fifty years is huge for any community event, especially one that puts money straight back into local businesses,” she told me Thursday afternoon. “People still talk about projects they started because of a conversation they had at the expo ten or twenty years ago.”
Bigger and Better Than Ever for the Golden Anniversary
This year’s show is the largest in recent memory. Vendors are bringing everything from luxury vinyl plank flooring that looks like real hardwood to high-efficiency heat pumps that can slash energy bills by 40 percent or more. Several companies are rolling out exclusive expo-only discounts and financing offers that won’t be available again until next year.
Attendees will see live demonstrations of spray foam insulation, tankless water heaters, smart home security systems, and even a full outdoor kitchen setup that survived last winter’s brutal cold without a single issue.
Here are some of the hottest categories drawing crowds this weekend:
- Solar power and battery storage solutions (multiple local installers report waitlists stretching into 2025)
- Custom garage makeovers with epoxy floors and built-in storage
- Whole-home water filtration systems
- Luxury shower remodel packages starting under $12,000
- Colorado-native landscaping ideas that actually save water
Why Locals Say This Event Still Beats Scrolling Online All Day
In an age when most people start (and often finish) their research on Google or Instagram, the expo delivers something the internet still can’t: real talk with real experts standing right in front of you.
“You can’t ask a website how long a roof will really last in Grand Junction’s crazy hail storms,” laughed Mike Reynolds, owner of a local roofing company who has exhibited at every single expo since 1998. “Here, people can touch materials, see color samples in natural light, and get honest answers about what works in our climate.”
Heiney agrees. “That face-to-face connection is what keeps people coming back year after year. You walk in with an idea and leave with a plan and a trusted contractor’s business card.”
Plan Your Visit: Hours, Tickets, and Pro Tips
The expo opens Saturday, October 19 at 10 a.m. and runs until 5 p.m., then reopens Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Grand Junction Convention Center on Main Street.
Admission remains a bargain at $5 general and $3 for seniors. Kids 12 and under get in free. Free parking surrounds the building.
Pro tip from past attendees: grab a vendor passport when you walk in. Get it stamped at participating booths and enter to win prizes including a $500 shopping spree, tool packages, and a complete patio furniture set.
Food trucks will be parked outside both days, and the first 200 guests Saturday morning receive a free insulated tote bag perfect for hauling home all those brochures and samples.
Fifty years ago, a group of local builders wanted to show Grand Junction what was possible. This weekend, their legacy fills an entire convention center with possibility once again. Whether you’re finally ready to gut that 1980s kitchen, add the deck you’ve always wanted, or just gather ideas for someday, the place to be is downtown this weekend.
Bring measurements, photos of your space, and plenty of questions. The people who know Western Colorado homes better than anyone are waiting to help you make your house feel like home.
