Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra Breaks Attendance Record with Beethoven Finale

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra (GJSO) capped off its 46th season in triumphant fashion over the weekend, hosting its largest indoor concert in history with more than 2,000 attendees gathering at the Avalon Theatre for a stirring performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

The monumental turnout on May 3–4 marked not only a milestone for the orchestra, but a resounding affirmation of the enduring appeal of classical music in Western Colorado.

“This concert has been a little bit emotional for all of us,” said Robyn Miley, GJSO’s Marketing and Development Director. “We just feel so strongly for the arts and for protecting the arts and bringing the arts to our community.”

Beethoven’s Ninth Resonates Across Generations

The featured piece — Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony — is widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in Western music. Its iconic final movement, “Ode to Joy,” provided both an emotional crescendo and a symbolic culmination of a season marked by growth, artistic ambition, and record-setting support.

For some, the opportunity to participate in such a performance was deeply personal.

“For most of us, this was a once-in-a-lifetime event,” said Cassa Fox, President of the Western Colorado Chorale, which collaborated with GJSO for the concert. “Some of our colleagues even came out of retirement just to sing this piece.”

Emotional Climax to a Celebrated Season

This record-setting event was the exclamation point on what GJSO staff describe as one of their strongest seasons to date.

“This has been an amazing season. We continue to grow, and everyone’s been really happy with the pieces we’ve performed,” said Miley.

Audience reaction at the concert underscored that sentiment. As soon as the final note faded, the theater erupted into an instant standing ovation — a rare and deeply rewarding moment for the musicians on stage.

“As a musician that’s worked so hard, that is wonderful to see and to feel that appreciation,” said Fox.

Looking Ahead to Season 47: “Soundscapes”

Following the success of Season 46, GJSO has wasted no time launching its upcoming programming. The theme for Season 47 is titled “Soundscapes”, signaling another year of immersive musical storytelling and creative exploration.

The full schedule includes an array of performances designed to expand the symphonic experience for audiences of all ages, with an emphasis on both traditional masterworks and contemporary collaborations.

Miley emphasized that GJSO’s ongoing success would not be possible without the steadfast support of its growing community base.

“We’re so grateful for everyone who comes out to support live music. Every face in the audience matters,” she said.
