Drivers in DeKalb County should prepare for changes on State Road 1 as the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) moves forward with two key projects aimed at improving safety and infrastructure.
All-Way Stop Coming to S.R. 1 and C.R. 40
INDOT officials have confirmed that the intersection of State Road 1 and County Road 40 will be converted into an all-way stop. This decision follows a traffic engineering study that identified the need to reduce crash frequency and severity at the location.
The new traffic pattern will take effect on or after Wednesday, March 26, with additional measures in place to alert motorists. These include:
- Oversized stop signs for increased visibility.
- Stop-ahead signs to warn approaching drivers.
- Buzz strips to encourage lower speeds.
- Stop bars painted on the road.
- Temporary message signs providing advance notice of the changes.
“Drivers should use extra caution after the changes take effect, as motorists adjust to the new traffic pattern,” INDOT officials emphasized.
Culvert Replacement Work to Close Section of S.R. 1
A second project will begin in early April, affecting traffic flow in another part of DeKalb County. INDOT plans to close a section of S.R. 1 between County Roads 60 and 64 near St. Joe for culvert replacement work.
- Start Date: On or after Tuesday, April 1
- Expected Completion: June (weather permitting)
- Detour Route: Drivers can use I-69 and State Road 8 as an official alternate route.
Officials stress that construction timelines may shift depending on weather conditions.
What This Means for Drivers
With two separate projects impacting S.R. 1, commuters should prepare for potential delays and adjust their travel routes accordingly. While the all-way stop aims to improve safety, the culvert replacement project ensures long-term road durability.
More updates will be provided as work progresses in the coming months.
