Local Nonprofit Hosts Fundraiser for Seniors at Barnes & Noble

Senior Engagement, a Grand Junction nonprofit dedicated to supporting seniors, teamed up with Barnes & Noble on Friday for a heartwarming fundraiser. This event was all about raising money and awareness for seniors in the Grand Valley, with proceeds aimed at benefiting approximately 2,000 older adults in the community.

How It Worked

The fundraiser was simple yet impactful. Community members were encouraged to visit the Barnes & Noble bookstore, grab a barcode slip from a Senior Engagement volunteer, and present it at checkout.

A portion of every purchase made with the barcode slip would then go toward helping seniors across the valley. The event ran from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., providing ample time for book lovers and supporters to contribute.

Supporting 2,000 Seniors Across the Valley

Lori Rienstra, a member of the Board of Directors for Senior Engagement, shared the group’s mission: “We service roughly 2,000 seniors throughout the valley. Those who are homebound, isolated, in long-term care, assisted living, and independent living situations. As well as at-risk adults with meaningful giving and thoughtful engagement throughout the year. We very much want our seniors to feel loved, needed, and accepted.”

Senior Engagement’s work addresses some of the most pressing challenges for seniors, such as loneliness, lack of resources, and disconnection from the community.

What Are Seniors Asking For?

The nonprofit shared a list of commonly requested items from the senior community, including:

  • Personal care items: Body wash, shampoo, and other hygiene essentials.
  • Food and drink donations: Hot cocoa, snacks, and pantry staples.
  • Books and crafts: Items that provide joy and encourage creativity.

These seemingly small items can make a big difference in the lives of seniors, bringing comfort and a sense of care to those who need it most.

A Community Effort

The fundraiser wasn’t just about dollars; it was about building connections. Volunteers at the event handed out barcode slips, answered questions, and shared more about Senior Engagement’s mission. Shoppers, meanwhile, had the chance to combine their love of books with a good cause.

Rienstra emphasized the importance of meaningful engagement, saying, “We want our seniors to feel loved, needed, and accepted.”

How to Get Involved

The fundraiser may have wrapped up, but the need continues year-round. Community members can still contribute by donating requested items, volunteering time, or spreading the word about the nonprofit’s efforts.
