Montrose police officer Tyler Cunningham didn’t hesitate. He kicked in the front door of a burning house and ran straight into thick black smoke to save an elderly woman who was screaming for help. Body-cam video released by the department shows the heart-pounding rescue that has now gone viral across the country.
Chaos Unfolds on White House Drive
Wednesday evening, October 23, 2024, just before 8 p.m. Neighbors on the 1900 block of White House Drive called 911 after seeing heavy flames pouring from a single-story home. When Officer Cunningham arrived as one of the first responders, bystanders yelled that someone was still inside.
He never waited for fire crews.
Cunningham ran to the front door, delivered one hard kick, and disappeared into the smoke. The body-cam footage captures flames already licking the ceiling and the sound of the woman crying out from deep inside the house.
“Help Me, Help Me!” – The Moment He Found Her
Inside, visibility was nearly zero. Cunningham pushed through the living room calling out for the woman. She answered weakly from the bathroom.
“I’ve got you, I’ve got you,” he told her as he found her crouched low, trying to escape the smoke.
The 88-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was too weak to walk. Cunningham scooped her up in his arms and carried her out through the burning hallway as fire crackled all around them.
He handed her to waiting paramedics. She was conscious, coughing, but alive. Montrose Regional Health treated her for smoke inhalation and later released her.
Chief Hall: “He Saved Her Life”
Montrose Police Chief Blaine Hall issued a statement the next day praising Cunningham’s actions.
“Officer Cunningham quickly recognized the gravity of the situation and took immediate, decisive action,” Chief Hall wrote. “His bravery and quick thinking undoubtedly saved this woman’s life.”
Cunningham, who joined the Montrose Police Department in 2022, has stayed quiet about the rescue. Friends and coworkers describe him as humble and exactly the kind of officer you want showing up when seconds count.
Body-Cam Video Goes Viral
The department released the footage on October 24. Within days it racked up millions of views on X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.
People everywhere are calling Cunningham a hero. Comments range from tears to standing ovations: “This is why we respect the badge,” one viewer wrote. Another said, “Watching him run in while everyone else is running out gave me chills.”

Fire Cause Still Under Investigation
Investigators are still working to determine what started the blaze. Early reports suggest it may have begun in the kitchen area, but nothing has been ruled out. The house suffered heavy damage and is likely a total loss.

This rescue is a powerful reminder of what police officers face every single shift. Officer Tyler Cunningham ran toward danger when most of us would run away, and because of that, a grandmother gets to hug her family again.
