United Closes the Cheap-Flight Path to Premier Status

United drops flight segments from 2027 Premier status, lifts 1K to 32,000 PQP, and reserves the 5% head start for cardholders.

United Airlines will stop counting flight segments toward MileagePlus Premier status in 2027 and raise Premier 1K to 32,000 qualifying points. The Chicago carrier posted 2027 Premier status thresholds on October 13, 2026, and emailed members the same day, calling the rewrite a simpler way to track status.

Silver, Gold, and Platinum keep their current points-only bars. The people who used a pile of cheap flights plus a lower point total lose that shortcut, and 1K is the only published tier whose point bar moves up.

Flight Counts Stop Counting in 2027

From January 1, 2027, Premier qualifying flights, or PQF, no longer help a member reach Silver, Gold, Platinum, or 1K. Premier qualifying points, or PQP, become the only status currency, earned on eligible fares, some award travel, and spending on an eligible United card. Activity in calendar 2027 decides status for the 2028 program year, and 2026 qualifying rules stay in force through December 31.

United still requires at least four flights on United or United Express in the same year. Partner-airline trips do not fill that floor, even when they credit PQP. Jarad Fisher, United’s president of MileagePlus, said the airline wanted one metric that covered flying and “engagement with the airline.”

We thought it made more sense for them to have one, consistent metric that actually was something that they can focus on across the board between their flight activity, their engagement with the airline. And, really making it so that we can invest more in the people who are investing in us.

Jarad Fisher, president of MileagePlus

Fisher also called the flight-count metric an “old relic” and said it was time to retire it. He told interviewers that most members already qualify on PQP, so the change “doubles down” on the path they use. The other path was the one that let a road warrior on short hops reach the same tier with less fare spend.

Losers on the Old Flight Path

The dual system was a discount for frequency. A member could make Premier Gold with 30 flights and 10,000 PQP instead of 12,000 PQP, or 1K with 60 flights and 22,000 PQP instead of 28,000. Those lower point targets vanish in 2027, so the same trip mix no longer clears the same tier unless the fares, extras, or card spend rise to match.

End-of-year “segment runs,” the extra cheap connections flown only to pad the flight count, lose their point. Basic Economy already paid no PQF, so the people most exposed were paid short-haul travelers stacking United Express and mainline hops at modest fares, not the passenger in Polaris.

WHO GAINS AND WHO PAYS

  • Cardholders with status: They keep earning PQP on everyday spend and, if they hold an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, they collect a 5% head start in 2027.
  • High-fare and long-haul flyers: They already lived on the PQP-only track, so Silver through Platinum do not get harder, and their dollars still mint points 1 for 1 on base fares.
  • Short-haul volume flyers: They must replace the missing PQF discount with more eligible spending, a United card, or a lower tier.
  • Would-be 1Ks on the old combo: They need 10,000 more PQP than the 22,000 that used to work with 60 flights, a 45% jump on that path.

Fisher’s own remedy for the last group was the co-branded card. “For those folks, obviously, getting a United card will be a way for them to actually bridge that gap,” he said. That line is the rewrite in plain speech: the gap is filled at Chase, not at the gate.

What Each Premier Tier Will Cost

United left the points-only bars for the first three tiers where they already sat. Only 1K moves, and it moves for everyone who wants the published top tier, including members who never used PQF.

PREMIER BARS FOR 2026 AND 2027

Tier 2026 flights plus PQP 2026 PQP only 2027 PQP only
Premier Silver 15 flights + 5,000 6,000 6,000
Premier Gold 30 flights + 10,000 12,000 12,000
Premier Platinum 45 flights + 15,000 18,000 18,000
Premier 1K 60 flights + 22,000 28,000 32,000

On United and United Express, members earn one PQP for every U.S. dollar of base airfare and carrier-imposed surcharges. Taxes and most government fees mint nothing. That is why 32,000 PQP is roughly $32,000 of eligible United fare, before card spend, award credit, or bought points enter the ledger.

The 1K increase is 4,000 PQP, or 14%, against the old points-only bar of 28,000. Against the old 60-flight option, it is 10,000 PQP. Those are two different starting lines, and United closed the cheaper one.

A 5% Head Start for Cardholders Only

United already handed current elites a January PQP deposit in 2026, including 1,400 PQP for 1K, and that bump went to Premier members whether or not they held the airline’s card. The 2027 version is smaller in reach and tighter in purpose. If you have an eligible United card by December 31, 2026, and you qualify for 2027 Premier status, United will load 5% of the PQP needed for the tier you just earned.

THE 2027 CARD DEPOSIT

  • Premier Silver: 300 PQP, which is 5% of 6,000.
  • Premier Gold: 600 PQP.
  • Premier Platinum: 900 PQP.
  • Premier 1K: 1,600 PQP, up from the 1,400 everyone with 1K received in 2026, because the 1K bar itself rose.

Opening an eligible card by that December 31 date also qualifies a member for the deposit. Everyday spend then keeps printing PQP. The Explorer card caps that stream at 1,000 PQP a year. The Quest card pays 1 PQP for every $20 of net purchases, up to 18,000 PQP, which United now bills as Platinum equivalent, plus a separate 1,000-point card bonus each program year.

The Club card is the 1K machine. United’s October 13 post raises its annual cap to 32,000 PQP, matching the new top bar, and the qualify page still prices Club Infinite and Club Business earn at 1 PQP per $15. At that rate, filling 32,000 PQP from the card alone is $480,000 of net spend, and the four United or United Express flights still have to happen. The United Club Card PQP on purchases is how a member who barely flies mainline can still buy the published top tier, as long as the wallet is large enough.

That is the split the rewrite locks in. A consultant on a string of $200 United Express tickets used to convert frequency into Gold. A household that puts groceries and gas on the Club card can manufacture the same PQP without ever becoming a commuting flyer. United already cut redeemable-mile rates on April 2, 2026, for members without its card, so the status rule is the second time this year the program paid extra to people who carry the plastic.

Premier 1K Now Costs 32,000 Points

Loyalty analyst Gary Leff has kept the older bars on record, and they show 1K getting heavier even before this week. In 2024, 1K still took 18,000 points plus 54 flights, or 24,000 points alone. United raised those figures for 2025 to 22,000 plus 60 flights, or 28,000 points, and held them through 2026. The 2027 points-only number of 32,000 is 78% above the 18,000 combo target from 2024, and the flight-count route is gone.

HOW 1K GOT HEAVIER

  1. 2024: Premier 1K takes 18,000 points plus 54 flights, or 24,000 points.
  2. 2025: The bar rises to 22,000 points plus 60 flights, or 28,000 points, and stays there through 2026.
  3. April 2, 2026: Redeemable-mile rates on United fares fall for members without an eligible United card, while cardholders keep a higher earn.
  4. October 13, 2026: United removes PQF and sets 2027 1K at 32,000 PQP.
  5. January 1, 2027: The new status rules start for the 2028 program year.

Delta already qualifies Medallion members on spending alone and left its 2027 bars unchanged, so United is now the large U.S. carrier asking more dollars for its published top tier while its rival holds still. American has also been on a spend-led loyalty-point model for years. United’s remaining distinction, the PQF discount, was the one it just deleted.

Members who just cleared 1K on the old mix are the ones most likely to stop stretching. A first-year 1K who used 60 flights and about 22,000 PQP now faces a 10,000-point hole, and the 1,600-point card deposit does not close it. Some of those flyers already describe the program as a moving target and talk about flying as free agents rather than feeding one carrier for a year. United’s public reply to one of them was that a single metric makes status easier to track. Tracking was not the complaint.

February Takes the Price Tags Off Upgrades

The same October 13 post repeats a change United first flagged in December 2025. For travel on or after February 1, 2027, PlusPoints upgrades leave the fixed chart. The number required “may vary based on demand and available seats,” United wrote, which means a member who banked PlusPoints as a 1K perk will not know the cost of a Polaris request until the system quotes it.

That lands on the same people who now need 32,000 PQP to keep the published top tier. They will spend more to stay 1K, then spend those PlusPoints into a market that can reprice peak dates without reprinting a chart. United did not publish the new upgrade menu with the status rewrite, so members cannot yet do the arithmetic on what 1K is worth in seats.

Million Miler lifetime status is a separate ledger and still runs on actual miles flown, not PQP. Companions of 1 Million Milers move to Premier Gold in 2027 unless they earn higher on their own. Those rules did not ride in the PQF deletion, and they are one of the few Premier promises that still treat flying, not card spend, as the unit of loyalty.

Members who want 2027 status under the old two-path math still have through December 31, 2026, to finish the year, and status earned this year runs into early 2028. After that, the cheap-flight discount is closed, the 1K number is 32,000, and the on-ramp United is willing to advertise is the card.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Do the New United Premier Status Rules Start?

They apply to qualifying activity from January 1 through December 31, 2027, and that year of earning sets Premier status for 2028. Nothing in the October 13 post changes what a member must earn during 2026 to hold status in 2027.

Do Partner Airline Flights Count Toward the Four-Flight Minimum?

No. Only United and United Express flights fill the four-flight floor. Star Alliance and other partner trips can still add PQP, at one PQP per five award miles on preferred partners (capped at 750 PQP in economy or premium economy and 1,500 in first or business) and one PQP per six award miles on other MileagePlus partners, with lower caps.

Can You Buy Premier Qualifying Points From United?

Yes. Premier Accelerator lets a member buy extra PQP when booking a United flight, which is a cash way to close a gap after PQF disappears. Those purchased points still sit on top of the four-flight minimum.

When Does 2026 Premier Status Expire?

United says members who reach Premier in 2026 keep that status through January 31, 2028, so a 2026 qualify year still buys a 13-month-plus benefit window even as the 2027 rules take over earning.

Do Award Tickets Still Earn Premier Qualifying Points?

They can. United awards 1 PQP for every 100 MileagePlus miles redeemed on United and United Express flights and seat upgrades, and that PQP goes to the person who travels, not the person who spent the miles. Mixed itineraries credit PQP only on the United-operated flights.

Numbers get particular attention here. A percentage in a business story is recomputed from the underlying figures before it goes live, a benchmark in a technology or gaming review is quoted with the conditions it was measured under, and a transfer fee or a lap time in the sports and auto pages is traced back to the club, the league or the timing sheet that published it. The same rule covers news, science, entertainment, lifestyle and travel: if a figure cannot be tied to a filing, a dataset, a transcript or a test Harry ran himself, it does not appear.
