Animal Shelter Seeks Justice for Abandoned Puppies

Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control (FWACC) is asking for the public’s help to identify the person who dumped ten puppies at their door on January 3, 2024. The puppies were left in a cardboard box with no food, water, or shelter from the cold weather. They were discovered by a staff member who arrived at work early in the morning.

Puppies in Critical Condition

The puppies, estimated to be about six weeks old, were in critical condition when they were found. They were suffering from hypothermia, dehydration, malnutrition, and parasites. They were immediately taken to the shelter’s medical clinic for treatment and care.

According to FWACC, the puppies are a mix of Labrador retriever and pit bull breeds. They are mostly black and brown, with some white markings. They are expected to survive, but they will need a lot of time and attention to recover from their ordeal.

Abandonment is a Crime

FWACC is urging anyone who has information about the person who dumped the puppies to come forward and report it. Abandoning an animal is a crime in Indiana, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. It is also a cruel and irresponsible act that puts the animal’s life at risk.

Animal Shelter Seeks Justice

FWACC is an open-access shelter that does not turn away any animal from Allen County, regardless of their condition. Anyone who needs to surrender their pet or finds an animal in need can contact the shelter for assistance. The shelter also offers pet assistance and rehoming services, as well as low-cost spay and neuter programs, to help pet owners in the community.

How to Help

The shelter is asking for donations to help cover the medical expenses of the puppies and other animals in their care. The shelter’s Angel Fund, which is funded by generous donations from the public, provides life-saving medical care to animals that have no other place to go. Donations can be made online through the shelter’s website or by mail or in person at the shelter’s location.

The shelter is also looking for foster homes and adopters for the puppies and other animals that are ready for a new home. Foster homes provide temporary care and socialization for animals that are too young, sick, or injured to be adopted. Adopters provide permanent and loving homes for animals that are healthy and happy. Anyone who is interested in fostering or adopting can fill out an application on the shelter’s website or visit the shelter during its adoption hours.

FWACC is located at 3020 Hillegas Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46808. The shelter’s phone number is 260-427-1244. The shelter’s website is www.cityoffortwayne.org/animal-care-and-control.html.
