Colorado Governor Jared Polis just threw down the gauntlet alongside 17 fellow governors, warning Congress that President Trump’s sweeping tariff plans will hammer American families with higher prices and cripple businesses nationwide. In a sharply worded letter released this week, the Democratic leaders called the tariffs “reckless” and demanded lawmakers refuse to codify them into law.
The bipartisan group says these tariffs are nothing short of a massive tax on working families at the worst possible time.
What the Governors Actually Said
The letter, first reported by Colorado outlets and now spreading across national media, pulls no punches.
Polis and his colleagues wrote that Trump’s proposed 10-20% universal tariffs, plus 60% duties on Chinese goods and 25% penalties on Mexico and Canada, would “devastate households already struggling with inflation” and “create chaos for employers who rely on stable trade.”
Polis himself called the tariffs “the largest tax increase on Colorado families in generations.”
He told reporters in Denver that every Coloradan would feel the pain at grocery stores, car dealerships, and home improvement centers because “tariffs are paid by American consumers, not foreign countries.”
The governors specifically asked Congress to reject any legislation that would permanently lock in these tariffs or strip lawmakers of their constitutional authority over trade policy.
Real-World Price Hikes Already in Sight
Economists largely agree with the governors’ warnings.
The Peterson Institute for International Economics estimates Trump’s full tariff package would cost the average American household $2,600 per year. Yale Budget Lab puts the number even higher at $3,800 for middle-income families.
Everyday items would see immediate jumps:
- New cars could rise $3,000 to $10,000
- Electronics and appliances up 15-25%
- Clothing and shoes jumping 20-30%
- Fresh produce from Mexico facing winter price spikes
Colorado’s outdoor recreation industry, which generates $62 billion annually, would take a direct hit from higher costs on imported gear and materials.
The 18 Governors Standing Together
The letter carries weight because it includes governors from every region of the country who all see the same threat.
Signers include major economic players like California (Gavin Newsom), Illinois (JB Pritzker), Michigan (Gretchen Whitmer), Pennsylvania (Josh Shapiro), and Washington (Jay Inslee), plus mountain west leaders like New Mexico’s Michelle Lujan Grisham and Arizona’s Katie Hobbs.
Notably absent: any Republican governors, highlighting the growing partisan divide over Trump’s trade agenda.
Businesses Sound the Alarm Too
The opposition extends far beyond Democratic politicians.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, National Association of Manufacturers, and Retail Industry Leaders Association have all warned that these tariffs would trigger retaliation from trading partners and disrupt supply chains that American companies spent decades building.
Ford Motor Company already announced it may need to raise pickup truck prices by $10,000 if the Mexico/Canada tariffs go through. Best Buy’s CEO said electronics prices “will absolutely increase” for consumers.
Even farmers, who suffered greatly during Trump’s first trade war with China, are speaking out. Soybean exports to China still haven’t recovered to pre-2018 levels.
The governors’ letter lands as Trump pressures Congress to give him unprecedented trade authority in early 2025 legislation. Democratic leaders in the House and Senate have signaled they will fight any attempt to surrender their constitutional power over tariffs, while some Republicans express private concerns about consumer price hikes.
The coming weeks will show whether Congress has the will to stand up to Trump’s trade agenda or if American families will pay the price for another round of tariff wars.
This fight matters deeply because it affects every single shopping cart, every family budget, and every small business trying to keep the lights on. When governors from California to Colorado are sounding the same alarm, Washington should listen before everyday Americans get stuck with the bill.
