Emergency Repairs Bring Lane Restrictions to Scott Road Until June 13
Drivers in Fort Wayne’s southwest corridor are in for a bumpy week as emergency road and utility repairs force intermittent lane closures on a key stretch of Scott Road.
The city announced that starting immediately, work crews will be operating between Covington Road and Illinois Road, fixing damage caused by both underground water main issues and recent storm-related road failures. Officials expect the work to wrap up by June 13—weather permitting.
Here’s what to expect on your commute
The restrictions aren’t constant, but they will be popping up at random times throughout the day, catching many drivers off guard.
If you’ve already driven the area this week, you’ve probably noticed cones, construction tape, and scattered crews setting up shop during peak hours. It’s not ideal.
At least one lane in either direction may close without much warning. City officials confirmed the restrictions are “intermittent,” meaning:
-
They could happen during rush hour or overnight
-
No set schedule will be published
-
Flaggers and traffic signs will be on-site when needed
That means the best approach is probably just to avoid Scott Road entirely if you can. No detour has been officially announced, but side roads like Hadley or Getz might save you some time and frustration.
Water main leaks sparked emergency response
So what caused all this? It’s not just regular construction.
City engineers say several water main leaks were discovered beneath the surface in recent weeks. Add in the damage from relentless rains and early summer heat, and you’ve got a recipe for cracked pavement, weakened shoulders, and buckled joints.
The emergency nature of the repairs means the city skipped a lot of the usual paperwork and jumped straight into action.
“This isn’t just preventative maintenance,” one city worker said. “It’s damage control. We’re trying to fix things before something worse happens.”
Business owners brace for a slow week
For drivers, it’s an inconvenience. But for some small businesses along Scott Road, it’s money walking out the door.
Brianna Keller, who manages a nail salon just off the intersection with Covington Road, says walk-ins have dropped significantly.
“Yesterday was dead. No one wants to deal with traffic,” she said. “And we’re barely into the work yet.”
Restaurants and retail shops in the area—especially those that rely on lunch-hour traffic—are already feeling the pinch. Some have turned to social media to alert customers that they’re open despite the cones and dust.
Timeline depends on the weather, again
If there’s one constant in Fort Wayne construction projects, it’s weather delays.
This one’s no different. The city says crews are aiming to wrap up by June 13, but rain, heat, or high winds could easily push that date back.
And with Indiana’s unpredictable summer forecast—where you might get scorching sun and flash floods in the same afternoon—that deadline is written in pencil, not ink.
Don’t be surprised if it slips.

A few tips if you still have to drive it
If Scott Road is part of your daily routine and there’s no getting around it, you’ve got options. Drivers who have already navigated the early closures say the following can help:
-
Leave 10-15 minutes earlier than usual
-
Use navigation apps with live traffic updates
-
Avoid turning left in construction zones when possible
-
Watch for sudden stops from other drivers near flaggers
-
Be patient — workers are just doing their jobs
It’s frustrating, yeah. But blowing your horn isn’t going to speed up a concrete pour.
City says this won’t be the last fix this summer
City engineers also hinted that Scott Road isn’t the only stretch of pavement on their emergency list. With this spring’s water table fluctuating and repeated freeze-thaw cycles behind us, more surprise repairs could pop up before July.
Fort Wayne’s infrastructure has been under pressure lately—aging pipes, increased traffic loads, and heavy rain have exposed weaknesses across the grid.
“We’ve got a lot of short-term patches that were meant to last a season or two. But seasons have a way of stretching into years,” one city planner said bluntly.
So buckle up. Scott Road may just be the beginning.
